Commercial Description:
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Red to brown color with a big head. Aroma and palate of caramel malt, a little bit roast, hops. Maybe some chocolate too.

Pours with a big frothy head. Reddish brown in color. Very malty tasting, full bodied. A typical beerhaus beer, I feel an injustice in only drinking 12 oz (I should pull out my stein). A bit of sweetness in the malt, as it warms up. I was surprised at nice this tasted out of the bottle as I had had this on tap at the Hofbrau in Munich and did not think it could come close. Most anything tastes better when you have an oompah band playing and a liter stein in front of you. Prost!

Bottle from BevMo, La Mesa. Pours a color very close to that of coke. Slightly roasted aroma with a hint of sourness. Mildly roasted flavor with a litlle bit of sweetness. Finish is somewhat like burnt coffee beans. Not too bad.

Tap at The Plattdeutsch Catering Hall: Pours a clear brown auburn color with a consistant tan head. Aroma is dominated by caramel malt, with light chocolate hints and a touch of cinnamon spicyness. The flavor is similiar. Caramel malt with subtle chocolate hints, metallic and some spicy notes of cinnamon, tarragon? And a quick dryness in the finish. A solid Dunkel lager.

Bottle. Aroma of sweet malt. Flavor of much of the same. However, it is very light on the palate and almost refreshing. Would be good to drink on a warm summer day.

Clear opaque, brownish red. Aroma of caramel malt; some very "german" flavor, don’t know exactly what. Light palate; caramel malt flavor with a light hint of hops. Only somewhat sweet. Not great, but drinkable.
