Commercial Description:
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Bottle (355ml). Poured dark bronze with a good sized, dense, frothy, lightly tanned head which was average lasting. Aroma was of rich toffee malts with caramelized dates, muscatels, plums, chocolate, yeasty notes, dust and some hints of cola in the back. Flavour was a moderate bitterness with toffee malts, raisins, currents, dates, light notes of cola, touch of chocolate, hints of nuts and a dry finish. Medium bodied with medium carbonation, a dry almost creamy mouthfeel and a decent finish. Just seemed a touch to thin.

Not that it matters but I had this on a beautiful day at my local Flying Saucer. Anyhoo, creamy off white head and dark amber in color. Rather heavy molasses aroma with roasted nutty notes mixed in. Coupled with a toasty malt flavor and a touch of sweetness thrown in. Overall a nice easy drinking beer.

Draught @ Hofbrau Miami. clear dark amber brown with beige head and lacing. Uber-fresh bread dough aroma includes brewer’s yeast and pumpernickel rye freshly baked. Soft mouthfeel. Liquid bread, like a lighter version of a doppelbock that way. Really nice. I’ve had this beer when it wasn’t tasting so damn fresh--when it’s on, it’s on!

Bottle. Pours clear brown with a small, fizzy, light brown head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (bread, toast, straw), light hops (herbs), average yeast (earth, broth) with notes of cardboard and apple. Medium bodied, thin texture, soft carbonation, and a metallic finish. Average duration, light sweetness, acidity, and bitterness.

I pick up a single green bottle at Pat-apostrophe-s Liquors in Porter IN. It pours a clear caramel/amber body with a tall and creamy beige head. It’s got a sweet malty aroma with a touch of rust and mineral water. The flavor drops those last two, lightly toasts the malts, and adds an herbal bitterness. Good session lager.

Slightly roasted malt aroma. Clear brown color with a medium off white head. Malty beginning getting sweeter in the middle fading slowly in the finish.
