Commercial Description:
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Poured from bottle. Clear medium brown color with some bubbly offwhite head. Aroma is sweet toffee caramel with a bit of sweet nuttiness. Flavor is typical sweet caramel malt with some doughiness and slight fruit flavor. Clean finish. Overall, nothing special.

Draught, Hofbrauhaus Munchen Cola-like in appearance. Flavour also has a bit of cola-like quality to it. Slight toffee sweetness with a lingering dry finish. Reasonably decent example.

Tap at Berry park. Poured a rich dark caramel. Nose was sweet, slightly spicy, a bit musty. Typically thin bodied with small bubbly carbonation. Not much up front a bit sweet. Mostly malty and creamy taste. Finish is bitter. An easy drinker with more flavor than most. But in the end it’s really not that easy for me to drink.

Pours a clear dark cola color with a full, lasting tan head. Aroma is malty and nutty. Taste is roasted sweet malt, caramel and a mild yet assertive hop bite. Quite good, but I gotta say the Hofbrau Dunkel on tap at the Newport Kentucky location is better.

A little on the lighter side in the mouth, bordering "watery"; malty; pretty dry ending, not the best; the spicy flavor balances very nicely with the sweet caramel flavor to make for an enjoyably complex taste; nice dark amber appearance. I recommend it.
