Commercial Description:
By tradition, the first barrel of Maibock is tapped in the Hofbräuhaus in the last week of April, in time for the merry month of May. The success story of Munich’s oldest bock beer goes back as far as 1614. With its powerfully aromatic flavour and its alcoholic content of some 7.2% volume, Hofbräu Maibock marks one of the high points in the beer-lover’s calendar!

Aroma is malty with just a hint of green bottle skunkiness. Pours with a sparkling copper clarity and a nice head. Starts with a strong malt flavor and no skunk (musta got a fresh one) followed by a smooth, drying finish. I’d love to have this on tap somewhere. Excellent beer.

12oz. green bottle served in a pilsner glass. Poured a clear copper with two fingers of off white head. Rich malty aroma, not really caramel, but that distinctive German malt aroma. Also some faint noble hops. The flavor is not as malty as the aroma might suggest, but there is a good malt base. On the lighter side of medium bodied. There is a bit of hop bitterness in the middle. Not sweet at all for all the malt, actually finishes fairly dry. Very drinkable to me. Nice bock.

Bottled 50cl. Courtesy of joss. It pours a clear copper beer with a nicely lasting lacing light beige head. The aroma is mainly of caramel, figs, raisin and mothballs. I prefer the taste which is nicely balanced, sweetish, fruity, very salty with crackers, caramel and raisin showing up. Malt accentuated. Some lacework. Salty finish. Thanks a lot joss!

Due to a backlog, I’m still drinking my maibocks in July. This one looks like a true maibock, orange/red, clear, white head. The aroma is malty, reminiscent of other German beers in that it has a sweet aroma, but also some vegetable matter. The flavor is sweet malts, bread, butter, fruit, vegetable/tomato. The finish is sweet, and also has a mild hop bittering. Medium mouthfeel, relatively high carbonation. Enjoyable, but not remarkable.

Tap. Pours a darkish full color with an off-white head. Aroma was malty with some sweet notes. Flavor was unremarkable, some malts and some alcohol present.

500 ml bottle in Germany. Thick malty dark color. Not a great fan of most HB beers but this was rather good. normally only serverd in the spring in Germany. Good stuff worth a try for sure.
