Commercial Description:
By tradition, the first barrel of Maibock is tapped in the Hofbräuhaus in the last week of April, in time for the merry month of May. The success story of Munich’s oldest bock beer goes back as far as 1614. With its powerfully aromatic flavour and its alcoholic content of some 7.2% volume, Hofbräu Maibock marks one of the high points in the beer-lover’s calendar!

Red orange color - nice head – nose tart red fruit – good hop (bitter) and smoky malt balance with sour red fruit (especially cherries) – rough texture - aftertaste crisp but lingering

Tasted 19/05/2006. 355ml bottle from RW&S, Wellington. Vibrant copper (Fritha reckons amber), bright, lightly carbonated, with a disappearing off-white head. Mild nose, but very pleasant, shows off caramel malts, spicy continental hops and a hint of lager yeast. Sweet and sappy malts blend well with with grassy spicy hops and end in a slightly astringent finish (probably the only downfall as it just leans away from perfectly balanced). I’ve seen these Hofbrau beers on the shelf for a couple of months now and the Maibock is a very pleasant surprise (thanks Fritha). 24/05/2006. On tap at the Malthouse, Wellington. Superb biscuity notes from the toasted malt. Upped aroma and overall impression 1 point each.

Bottle. Fruity and peppery aroma. Dark copper colour. Semi-stable head. Nice peppery and malty flavours in good balance. The bitterness is a bit rough, but that also helps balance the malt.

thanks to my friend Aaron for the 1/2 L bottle. pours crystal clear, copper amber in color with a beige head which settles to just a ring of lace. aroma is caramel and a little bready. but oh what great flavor for the style! sweet caramel, bready yeast, some spice and a medium to full mouthfeel. very enjoyable.

Smeels pretty good, caramel slightly. The flavor definitely has some caramel. Yummy and actually a little rich given the color. Hops in the finish makes this quite nice.

Draft. Clear amber body with a small off-white head. The aroma is fairly simple, sweet caramels, some floral hos. The flavor is very malty, caramel and toffee, some bitterness at the end. Medium body, slightly chewy. Very enjoyable.

Fantastic spicy aroma, sticky frothy head and perfect clear body. Strongly malty and flavorful, with the hops in there mingling. Some flavors here I can’t quite put my finger on, but I like it. The rest of the 6 pack will be left in the back of the fridge to age for 3 or 4 months.. I think.. or maybe just get a whole case ;)

Pours amber with a one-finger head. Aroma of caramel, German hops, and old cigars. Big caramel flavor, with a musty, lightly hoppy finish. Some of the cigar ash flavor is there, which keeps this from being one I’ll come back to.
