Commercial Description:
By tradition, the first barrel of Maibock is tapped in the Hofbräuhaus in the last week of April, in time for the merry month of May. The success story of Munich’s oldest bock beer goes back as far as 1614. With its powerfully aromatic flavour and its alcoholic content of some 7.2% volume, Hofbräu Maibock marks one of the high points in the beer-lover’s calendar!

500 ml bottle in Germany. Thick malty dark color. Not a great fan of most HB beers but this was rather good. normally only serverd in the spring in Germany. Good stuff worth a try for sure.

Enjoyed on tap at Hofbrauhaus Pittsburgh. Given the fact that I was at the Hofbrauhaus and this was one of their specialty beers imported from Germany, my hopes and expectations were rather high. The 16oz sample poured a nice dark brown to very dark copper. The nose was really inviting, giving appetising notes of Munich malt and perhaps a little bit of Pilsner malt peaking through. Unfortunately, I found the palate to be rather one-sided. Obviously, the style is malt-forward, and I have no complaint with that. However, I was expecting a little more complexity than what I ultimately got. Also, the rather abrubt ending of the beer was unpleasantly surprising. There was no long lingering finish that one gets somewhat used to when drinking higher strength German Mai- and Doppelbocks. Overall, it is obviously worth drinking and ordering, but it was a little less than what I was expecting.

On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Hazy amber pour, off-white head. Fruit, caramel malt, bread, and some light grassy notes. Fairly sweet, it’s alright.

Tap at City Beer in SF. Amber color with a one-finger off-white head. Aroma of caramel malt and grain. Flavor is Munich malt with caramel, slight grainy notes, and German hops. Medium body and a slightly dry finish.

Overall Impression: Good beer, probably even better if you drink it in the Beer Garden, but I’ve only had it out of the bottle

On tap at the Pittsburgh Hofbräuhaus. Light malty aroma, grainy but clean. Light hops presence but smooth. Dark amber clear with thin off-white lacing head. Medium watery body with medium carbonation. Starts fairly malty with nice Munich malt, light caramel and a bit of toasted character. Can’t taste alcohol but it’s there. Light sweet malty after with a bit of bitter character. A little warming. Nice Maibock.

Pours an amber color with an off-white head. Toasted and slight roasted malt aroma comes out pretty strong with some plums. Flavor is the same, and it seems slightly watered down. Overall not too bad, but not great.
