| 2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 2/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Nov 21, 2009 Bottle. Looks like black tea. Desultory head. Fruit and pine aroma. Toffee, bubblegum and raisin malt sweetness. Spruce hops and plenty of fairly dull bitterness. If there are lots of hops in here they are ill-used. davidm (186), Melbourne, Australia
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Oct 27, 2009 Bottle 330ml. Good name for a great beer. Aromas of pine and caramel. Flavour is long-lasting, with a sweet start and bitter notes. Medium to full body, silky in the palate. Brown colour, head disappears. mkel07 (552), Brisbane, Australia
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 4, 2009 330ml bottle. Copper colour, ruby almost red. Barely any head at all, just a small gathering of bubbles that float across the surface. Strong alcohol flavours come through with a hint of piney hop notes. Strong flavour with a bitter. Robust and lingers and lingers in the mouthy. sinkas (182), Perth/Fremantle, Australia

Preactiacally flat, far too sweet, and lacking in bitterness, I fear holgate have not tasted a IIPA, of any credit. Probably not a great idea. BeerChaser0078 (372), Melbourne, Australia
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 26, 2009 Bottle. I may be the exception here but I didn’t think this was too bad. Pours a nice copper with a small amount of head but a bit of lacing. Aroma is full of toffee, caramel, malt, toasty bread and raisins. Tastes pretty similar but less sweet than the nose suggests. There is some sweetness though and a little hop bitterness, but nowhere near the amount of hops that the label claims. Quite sessionable, a good summer beer. nate2g (1132), Brisbane, Australia
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 22, 2009 Draught at Holgate Brewhouse, Woodend. Pours copper with a creamy beige head. Rich malts, toffee, dark fruit and caramel. Agree that it’s not as hopped as the label makes out. More syrupy malt than anything else. But it is better on draught than the bottle, which was terrible. The balance isn’t great and the alcohol is noticeable for not that high of an ABV. I was expecting more to be honest. jonno (603), Brisbane, Australia
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Aug 21, 2009 Don’t know what they were trying for here. Definately not a DIPA. More like a strong ale. Lots of malt, bready and caramel. Minimal hopping especially for this style. Won’t try again.
