SamGamgee (1396), Santa Cruz (La Selva), California, USA May 27, 2008 Nitro tap at the brewpub. Black with ruby edges and a creamy tan head. Coffee aroma; lots of roasted malts, though a little muted. The flavor is quite bitter with lots of roasted malt coffee type flavors, but also has a hint of malt sweetness. Finished bitter with hops and well as burnt malt. The mouthfeel is a little flat, as is to be expected with nitro, but is better than usual, with more body than I expected for the strength. Overall, the bitterness and body are a welcome qualities when I wasn’t expecting much more than a guinness clone. Packs a good amount of flavor in for a four percent beer.
