BeerHawk (1175), Huntsville, Alabama, USA Jan 19, 2009 2008 Bottle. Black with a tan head that settles to a ring and left light lace. Subdued aromas of milk chocolate and roasted malts. The flavor stands out more with chocolate, coffee, roast, and nut. Medium to full body, creamy texture, and a roasty aftertaste. Rustyham (545), miami, Florida, USA Jan 18, 2009 Like any good black ale, this has strong flavors of coffee, but they are made icier, smoother and more refreshing by the pomegranate twist. A purply black color with no head but nice lacing. pantani (1894), Salinas, California, USA Jan 18, 2009 Bottle shared by CapFlu from Oakes. Black with brown edges thin cream head. Aroma is a very roasty pomegranate with milk chocolate faint hoppiness, caramel. Taste is a very rich chocolate with pomegranate coming through in the aftertaste with a light roastiness and smoke- light toffee. Pretty interesting good stuff. Tripplebrew (486), Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA Jan 16, 2009 Pours a dark chocolate with very little tan head. Aroma is chocolate malts with roasted hazelnuts. Flavor is an interesting mix of chocolate/coffee malts with a fruity cranberry flavor to take away the bite. It is an interesting bite on the classic chocolate notes for this beer. Body is creamy but light and light carbonation. dwyerpg (2519), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Jan 16, 2009 A little lactic in this aroma. Great appearance. A lot of roast in this. The pomegranate only shows it’s face with a slightly fruity finish. Some coffee. Very strange. slimchill (771), Austin, Texas, USA Jan 6, 2009 Bottle. Aroma is roasty with chocolate acidity. Black with a bubbly thin brown head. Good thickness with chocolate and coffee, very light on pomegranate. Smoky/roasty finish. Sharp palate but with a decent thickness. Hank1980 (732), Athens, Georgia, USA Jan 6, 2009 On tap at Aroma’s. Appearance is very black, with a small tan head. Aroma of sour fruit (must be pomegranate), chocolate, malt. Taste is a fruity, malty, roasty mess. Fruit is a little on the tart side. Finish is tart and a little fruity. Overall, a little too fruity and tart for this stout, though still very interesting. Not something I’d seek out, but I’m glad I tried. ChainGangGuy (2522), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Jan 5, 2009 Appearance: Onyx black body with a thin, thought creamy-looking, light tan head.
Smell: Aroma smelling of espresso and succulent fruit with secondary notes of semisweet chocolate and toffee.
Taste: Dark, roasty maltiness with sweet tastes of chocolate and toffee candy. Moderate sweetness. Underlying fruitiness like a splash of both subtly tart POM Juice and prune liqueur. Tiny bit of aniseed. Very mild hop character and bitterness, leaving the punchy roastiness to counter the sweetness. Still though, this one finishes a bit sweetish and definitely fruity.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel.
Drinkability: Smooth and fruity (without being too fruity) thanks to the addition of health-inducing pomegranate juice.
