Cletus (5001), Connecticut, USA Aug 21, 2008 Bottle courtesy of juiceisloose. Pours black with a thin off white head. Smells of chocolate malt, booze, some molasses, hints of spice. Tastes of caramel, molasses, a touch of pomegranate, boozy. Decent. Beerman6686 (1264), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 20, 2008 Pours a black color with hardly any head at all. Aroma is of black patent malts, a bit of roastiness, and some fruit. Flavor is a weak watery roasted flavor with that hint of pomegranite in there. This is a perfect example of ho not very good beers get good ratings because they are a stout. bierkoning (5987), La Tropica, Netherlands Aug 14, 2008 Bottle from Solan. Black and opague. Roast, licorice and a hint of pomegranate in the aroma. Sweetish, fruity, roasty, salty flavor with licorice. Medium to full bodied, smooth beer. mmmbeer (737), Austin, Texas, USA Aug 13, 2008 Bottle in trade from daknole, thanks! Consumption from a shaker- poured non transparent heavily used motor oil from a tractor trailer black, upper end low carbonation of tiny bubbles. Aroma of coffee, dark bakers chocolate, dark toasted wheat bread, and dark fruit. Hits the mouth with a wide body, malt is roasted heavily just from the first taste, hard coffee taste, mild sweetness on the end. A little out of balance, but still good and drinkable. haukur (682), Reykjavik, Iceland Aug 13, 2008 pitch black with a small brown head. Aroma is roasted coffe beans, dark chocolate, some tiny hints of pepper. Taste has lively carbonation, some stickyness, small hint of the pomegranate juice in the finish. Overall a soldi stout. thanks to beastifan2k bitbucket (2026), Kirkland, Washington, USA Aug 12, 2008 Bottle, thanks daknole! Pours opaque blackish brown with a scant and fading tan head. Aroma of coffee, blackberries, and a touch of chocolate. Creamy medium body and active carbonation. Lightly sweet taste of coffee, biscuit. Dry espresso finish that is a bit tart. Pretty nice, but I would enjoy it more if it wasn’t over-carbonated. BrewDad (2363), Olympia, Washington, USA Aug 12, 2008 12oz Bottle - Trade - Dankole

otakuden (518), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Aug 12, 2008 Mack pours a deep luscious black, almost like liquid velvet on a starless night. Gorgeous. A thin cappuccino-colored head forms at the top which fades to a gentle ring around my glass. Personally, I think she doesn’t want to get in the way of the beer I spy down below. Black toasty malts and sweet pomegranate notes tingle my senses. A little black cherry tartness mingles in the background, an afterthought created from pomegranate goodness mixing with malt sweetness? Body - super smooth, almost creamy, with a full yet delicate weight. The malts are sweet, but not cloying, with a bit of bitter burnt nuts that settle on the top of my tongue, leaving a pleasant dryness. I can definitely taste the pomegranate. As Mack warms, even more of the pomegranate aroma and flavor comes to the forefront. A bit of bubbly effervescence, maybe some residual carbonation from the fermentation, but not a detriment to the overall palate. Mildly sweet malts, burnt nuts, and fresh hints of sweet pomegranate finish with a dry flourish and a puckering zing of lemon.
Gordash Brewing’s Holy Mackerel Mack in Black is very complex and yet oh-so-delicate at the same time. Seriously, one of the best Imperial Black Ales I have drank so far, and one of the first flavored ones at that.
(this review is of the 1st batch Mack In Black)
