Commercial Description:
Bottled. Pasteurised.
A smooth, full-bodied stout with a refreshing hoppy aftertaste. Brewed with proportions of Black Malt for colour and 'toast' flavour and Brown Malt for dryness. Based on a recipe over 100 years old, brewing was revived in 1996 after a break of 79 years.

Dark brown with a creamy tan head. Roasty aroma, laced with caramel, vanilla, and licorice. Roasted coffee, chocolate, some dark fruit in the flavor. Moderately sweet, with a medium body, maybe a bit on the thinner side for a stout, but this is very drinkable and tasty.

Pours a very dark opaque reddish brown with a huge creamy beige froth on top! Sweet and sour aroma of spoiled milk, light chocolate, and malted milk balls. First taste is of dry roast and cream, followed by a more sweeter roast. Not too sweet, nor too dark and roasty... really excellent balance. There is some definite sourness in the finish/aftertaste as alluded to by the aroma, also a tad of licorice. Full bodied, creamy, with very gentle large bubbled carbonation. Well balanced, tastes like a milk stout, but not quite a sweet stout.

500 ml bottle

As I begin to work my way through the counties of England this one caught my eye as a place to start. It is a little pricey but considering how badly the dollar is doing right now I am not surprised. I’d love to try this on cask to see how it compares.

Aroma / Appearance - A carbonated black body with an off white head smelled of smoky coffee, malt, blackberries and an overall lightness.

Flavor / Palate - Fluid and lightly bitter with a hint of woodiness this was a great sessionable beer. At $4.99 I might not buy it again any time soon but the price was not too much out of line.

500 ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a large fine beige head. The aroma is roasted malt, coffee, grass/earthy notes, and light chocolate. The flavor is more of the same; roasted malt, coffee bitterness, chocolate, and an earthy finish. Lighter feel which helped make this easy to drink. This one turned out to be a decent stout that exceeded expectations a bit.

Dark & brooding colour with a creamy coffee and chocolate aroma. Smooth dark chocolate coffee taste with a velvety feel in the mouth. Fantastic although the bottle conditioned is far superior.

Black, with a bit of brown around the edges. Thin but dense beige head. Lots of coffee and dark chocolate, plus some hints of burnt toast in the aroma. Similiar mix of flavors, although the chocolate is a bit more subdued than in the aroma. Smooth and quaffable.
