acrdz (4283), Boulder, Colorado, USA May 8, 2008 Pours dark cola brown (a bit of light shining through, like a weak colored porter or dark brown ale), mostly clear, and with a pale brown head. Very plain smell of chocolate ash and malted milk balls. Sweet and light flavor, subdued, unoffensive, a faint bit of cream and milk up front with some dryness in the finish, all very mild. Not bad, but didn’t do much for me.
TheGrandMaster (1446), Auckland, New Zealand Aug 29, 2008 Bottle (in NZ), black with a creamy tan head. A big sweet, but cheap, chocolate aroma. More roasted coffee on the palate, with that caramal sweetness. Just too rich and sweet for me, especially for just 4.8%. bhensonb (2858), Woodland, California, USA Aug 26, 2008 Bottle from John’s Marketplace in Portland, OR. Pours black with a decent tan head. Aromas of dark roasted malt and possibly hop. Medium body with creamy carbonation. Smooth mild flavors of burnt malt and a very little hop. Finishes very pleasantly. marcus (980), Sacramento, California, USA Aug 25, 2008 This black ale poured with a brief thin beige head and a hefty malt aroma. There is a chalky but pleasant malt flavor that is chewy and mild. A decent brew. Parasympatikus (7), , Finland does not count Aug 25, 2008 Aroma is roasted malty with a hint of chocolate. Tastes like dark chocolate and coffee being balanced and dry. While warming this one gets salty. Not bad. tim2thousand (1), , New Zealand does not count Aug 23, 2008 Bottle from Hillcrest fine Wines. Poured beautifully at just below room temp with a nice, but slightly loose, tan head. Nice aroma with a little chocolate and roast. Medium to full bodied and smooth, a little over carbonated to my palate for the style. Flavour was well balanced and interesting a little more chocolate than expected from the aroma and a longish dry finish. Great winter sipper or slurper.
