Pour is nearly black with some fudge brown hues and a thin layer of creamy tan head. The aroma is pleasantly balanced between whiskey and the base beer character, giving a rich impression of boozey chocolate fudge. The bourbon character are clear, but at the same time balanced, allowing a pleasant amount of malt to shine through. The barrel character consists mainly of spicy oak and boozey whiskey, with a touch of vanilla - pleasing, but my personal preference is to have more of a vanilla bomb. Rich chocolate and toasted oats provide a hearty base, with some restrained roast. It’s surprising how much the oats come through in the nose. Medium-full bodied, lightly carbonated mouthfeel with a slick, oily texture. Pleasantly rich in flavor and body, but much of the textural impression seems to come from the oats as opposed to cloying sugars. Semi-sweet dark chocolate and peppery whiskey up front on the palate; boozey, but in a soft and warming kind of way. The spicy oak contributes some balancing tannins. Hints of vanilla and toffee. Toward the finish, some grassy, resinous hop characters begin to emerge, pleasant in the bitterness balance in the malt, but the flavor character seems somewhat at odds with the other flavors for my palate. My favorite aspect of this beer is the balance between the barrel and malt characters, my least favorite is the hop character, but overall this is a very nice beer. Thanks for sharing, Julian!

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 25, 2009 Bottle. Almost pitch black, quickly disappearing head. Oak, vanilla, molasses and dark chocolate in the aroma. Powerful sweet, yet deceptively drinkable beer with vanilla, chocolate, oak, caramel, hints of licorice and lots of dried plums. Full bodied, syrupy mouthfeel. Alcohol and tobacco showing up in the aftertaste. Low on carbon, but a quite delicious and complex beer indeed. skortila (2913), Bunnik, Netherlands
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Dec 22, 2009 Bottled. The aroma has chocolate, some vanilla, oak/bourbon and some dark fruits. Very delicate. Black coloured beer with a brown head. The taste is slightly bitter, sweet with lots of chocolate, some vanilla, bourbon/cognac. Nice dark fruitiness there. Full bodied, balanced, mild and complex. Really awesome. TheRealBastard (144), The-No, California, USA

Cracked this one while Tim was on the phone talking to his brother. Tim exclaimed, "That looks like motor oil!" Pours with plenty of carbonation and weak lacing on glass. Taste contains hardly any proof of barrel aging. Didn’t have an alcohol burn at all, an extremely smooth sipper. Amazing brew recommended. Lagunitasfan (462), San Diego, California, USA

The two of us polished this thing off after a Cable Car and Stone 10th. Nice afternoon, eh? Nose is cocoa, sweet dark fruit, and a hint of vinegar tartness. Massively smooth in the mouth. Smoother than ANY other good stout I’ve ever had. No alcohol at all. Creamy and oats. Sublime. Looks like motor oil but tastes like silk. Absolutely loved it. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 19, 2009 This is probably a little better than I rate it. I’m just not a fan of the overpowering whiskey flavor. I wish someone would figure out how to age in bourbon/whiskey without the flavor being so strong. This one does seem to be pretty tasty despirte that complaint.
