DrBayern (935), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Mar 26, 2007 22 oz. bottle shared on 3/22/07 with my brother who brought it from Ohio on our recent trip to Colorado. Pours out like spent motor oil, except this was blacker. I thought i was going to have to find a thin spatula to get it all out of the bottle. Big, dark brown head that persisted nicely under some excellent lace. Deep. dark chocolate aroma laced with roasted nuts, espresso, and dark fruit. Thick, oily mouthfeel, yet somooth, rich and chewy with just enough carbonation to enhance rather thatn detract. The roasted malts provide most of the bitterness with this one, with the underlying dark caramel and chocolate sweetness providing the needed balance. This is a big, rich Impy Stout - what a treat.
cgarvieuk (2350), Edinburgh, Scotland Aug 24, 2008 Bottle at home ... <thaks to WeeHeaxySD for this, a beer that was one of the first to cathc my eye with its great name ... Deep black with an ever so slight red tinge to the head ...Deep roast and loads of Chocolate in the nose ... Deep roast ... little burnt malts ... HUGE amount of chocolate ... smooth with a little spirit ... just so soft smooth silky and lovely deep chocolate .... burntness subsides over time ... sleestak (63), Williamston, Michigan, USA Aug 23, 2008 Bomber! Poured pretty frickin’ black with a light brown shaving cream head which stuck around for a while. Nose was really rich with lots of roasted malt, chocolate and coffee. Also notes of hazelnut and sweet, sweet booze. You thankfully get all the same stuff in the flavor with a little added hops zing in the finish. Heavy body with little carbonation and a silky mouthfeel. Sticky, but not overly sweet. Good stuff. Old_Mr_Crow (1007), Seattle, Washington, USA Aug 22, 2008 Bottle, aged maybe a year or so.
Pours deep deep black with a nice tan head. Lovely aroma of mocha, some vinous elements. Excellent balance of very dark chocolate, roasted coffee, vinous flavors, blackberry, and at one year of age, still a clean but not overblown hop bite on the close. A bit hot, but not dramatically so, a bit sticky, but what do you expect? Nice imperial stout, this one definitely belongs up there in the tally. jimhilt (1402), Bow, New Hampshire, USA Aug 21, 2008 Pours a one finger tan head that fades quickly, leaving some lace. Black as midnight. Light carbonation and heavy bodied. Roasted chocolate nose. Flavor is sweet roasted chocolate and coffee. Bitterness stays in background. High ABV is hidden. Decent oatmeal stout. $10.45 for a 22oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma. Fruitfly (40), , Pennsylvania, USA Aug 21, 2008 22oz bottle. Pours nearly black with a very little crown of fine tan head. Nose is rich, first with alcohol, then chocolate, then deep roasted malts and a good dose of hops. Flavour is sweet and heavy, almost like a light chilled coffee liquor taken straight. Notes of lightly dried walnuts as well. There’s a good amount of carbonation that leaves this one sharp on the palate. The nice long bitter finish means you can draw out this excellent experience.
