SuzyGreenberg (1043), Seattle, Washington, USA Jun 3, 2008 22 oz. bottle - thanks to drewbeerme for trading to long desired crusher; pours jet black and has the motor oil look to it; thin, chocolate colored head; strong roasted malts, some oats and chocolate; drinks sweet and slightly bitter; dug the body and texture; lots of chocolate and very strong overall as it warms up right up; dry finish and much better as it warmed
Jsawyer (24), , Pennsylvania, USA Oct 13, 2008 Smooth malt, oat, cereal, coffee, and chocolate malt. Also somewhat phenolic but not overwhelming as it blends with the chocolate very well. Amazingly dark black body, thin mocha/chocolate head with nice lacing. Flavor is roasted cacao nibs and mocha, oats, and a sweet dark fruit hop finish. Full bodied velvety smooth wonderful mouth. Warming dry bittersweet finish. Amazing beer. adamlangolf (6), Indianapolis, Indiana, USA does not count Oct 13, 2008 smooth malt, oats and a bit of coffee. But for me the alcohol was not disguised well enough. A little heavy for me. I liked the Silk Porter better...I didn’t like this one nearly as much as everyone else apparently. timsilvia32 (254), from Michigan now in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA Oct 9, 2008 Black/brown pour with ruby tones. Barely present brown bubbles. Roasty aromas of malt, coffee, grains. Initial taste is roast malt, roasted oat and quite a bit of coffee. As it warms it mellows a bit and hits the mocha and port like flavors. Very smooth mouthfeel, not quite creamy. A big beer, full bodied for sure. Not over run with alcohol or bitterness. The oat sets this apart a bit from the typical RIS. If it was available to me other than mail order, would definetely buy again. Would like to see what some age does to this also. May have to make my way through Akron on the way home to Michigan. petermadsen (339), Vesterbronxxx, Denmark Oct 8, 2008 This is a big, smooth imperial stout, with a silky and mellow structure, that really sets it apart from others.
The aroma is filled with nice cocoa, coffee and some sweet, malty notes. The flavour is round and wonderfull with a perfect blend of coffee, hops, alcohol and some fruity notes. The oats rounds the whole thing off. Not very bitter.
A really nice beer! FunkyBrewster (151), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 8, 2008 Pours a jet black color with a light brown head that dissipates but leave a small froth. Aroma is dark roasted malt and chocolate with some brown sugar and molasses notes. Flavor starts off with some thick cocoa and sweet molasses flavors before opening up to some bitter but rich fig and oatmeal notes. The finish leaves some rich bitter espresso coffee flavors in the mouth. Extremely full body and very rich. This is a knock out through and through. Well done.
