Commercial Description:
Total Eclipse Black Ale has been described as similar to a light, dry stout. Characterized by its distinctive hop aroma and rich, black color, Total Eclipse redefines the way you think about a dark ale. Brewed at a low temperature to create a refreshingly dry finish, Total Eclipse uses only the finest two row malted barley and hops grown in the great Pacific Northwest. This combination results in a clean, crisp, hand-crafted experience.

Dark brown. Light chocolate aroma with a hint of fudge. Somewhat thin body with roast and chocolate. Vague nuttiness. Quick finish. I’d like a bit more residual sugar to round out the body and bring some of the roastier, more chocolatey notes to the fore.

Dark black color (surprise surprise), malty roasted coffee aroma. Flavor has nice mellow roast character with some smokiness at the end. Like a stout but less filling. Would have preffred some more maltiness.

This is ok, clean and basically pleasant but too bitter for the body and flavour. Essentially black but actually red brown, it has a big, dark tan head slowly shrinking to a permanent thin head and elaves some lasting lace in even rings. The aroma is chocolate, coffee, darkly toasted brown bread, hints of prunes and fruit - pretty nice. The taste is quie dry with chocolate, hint of coffee, roasty with toasted bread, light hints of fruit - like a pretty good dry dtout but more full-bodied. The roasty bitterness is dominant and a little too bitter and sharp.

Kinda bland, if you ask me. Nice and dry (not a big fan of sweet stouts) and with a nice oily consistency in my mouth. Pours black with tan head. Flavor and aroma is mostly roasted malts, with notes of coffee, bitter chocolate, sesame and just a touch of hops. I was expecting something a little more ’Black IPA’-ish but its OK.

22 oz. bottle - pours dark brown with off-white head; aromas mainly of roasted malts; body is thin and flavors are thin as well; not much except the roasty notes; dry finish; more of a lame porter with a touch of hops

22 oz bottle from Holiday Wine CellarJet black with ruby tint and a medium light tan head. Aroma of black coffee and dark chocolate. Flavor is lightly burnt black coffee with some dark chocolate, a little smoke and a strong bitter coffee/bakers chocolate finish. Medium body is creamy with moderate carbonation.
