The aroma is very sweet and very malty besides notes of caramel, brewmash, straw, and hops. The flavor is sweet with notes of caramel as well as hints of roasted malt and hops. The end is bitter and dry. highlandlad (1278), Sydney, Australia
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jan 11, 2005 Ruby-brown German ale brewed to a traditional recipe. Pours with an invitingly big, creamy head but is let down by a thin barely-there aroma (sample may have been over-chilled). Hint of plum and some malt. Sweetish and malty on the front of the palate, giving way to a pleasantly hoppy, dry finish. A smooth, easy quaffer but unremarkable. mutant (854), Melbourne, Australia
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 5, 2005 Very malty aroma and initially a quite sweet malty taste, which I like. Then there is a lot of roasted bitterness and it is a bit woody. It seems to be a little like the bottled English Ales we get in Australia. mullet (801), Melbourne, Australia
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Dec 20, 2004 I was quite excited to find this in Sydney as I recall really enjoying it when it was last available in Australia, unfortunately it’s not that good. Good deep copper colour with OK head. Initially a clean toasty malt aroma which becomes much more toffee-ey and pineappley as it warms. Pretty fat sweet malt flavour with lots of flabby toffee. There’s a light metallic bitterness but for something calling itself "bitterbier" it really shouldn’t have its balance tipping towards the sweet and malty. Oh well, the bottle is great for home brew... Linc (736), Sydney, Australia
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Dec 19, 2004 After seeing the massive, fine bubbled head on this caramel coloured beer, I was a little disappointed to find it lacking in other departments. Uninteresting aroma of hay, a little hop flavour with light maltiness and not a great deal of body. I’m not too sure what this beer was trying to be. dirkbreedveld (254), Netherlands
