Appearance: Very red mahogany, transparent, with creamy uneven 2 finger beige head, receding to ring but leaving impressive lacing. Aroma: Vinous with malt, winter warmer spices, and treacle. Taste: Lots of smooth maltiness with nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla, maybe some other spices. Rich vinous flavours, some treacle. Wonderfully well brewed richness. Tastes like a mix of an excellent winter ale and a well aged barley wine. Mouthfeel: Fairly full bodied, fairly carbonated for the style, but intensely rewarding. Drinkability: Very moreish. The complexity of this beer, albeit not very dry finishing, is outstanding. This beer is so well made that it is a crying shame to not be available in bottles. Seriously one of the best beers I have ever tasted. Crit (2405), New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada

| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jun 23, 2008 Floral hops and grainy malts are somewhat overwhelmed by butterscotch in the nose. Clear, deep golden body is topped by a low, fine bubbled white head that recedes rapidly to ring. Butterscotch, caramel and a light floral, soapy hop flavour are offset by light bitterness. Aftertaste is somewhat grainy. Medium body with a touch of alcohol and moderate carbonation. Sampled on hand pump at the brewpub in Mar-08. Oakes (8093), gone rambling, Vietnam
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Jan 26, 2006 Slightly hazy amber colour. Healthy amount of peat smoke with caramel and toasty malt accents. Probably a little too caramelly on the palate for my liking, but it’s not a bad beer. JoeMcPhee (5000), Jackson Heights, New York, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Jan 24, 2006 Amber coloured brew topped by a fine-laced white head. Sweet malty aroma, light toffee, a bit of toast. Faint smokiness and light sweetness. Flavour is smokier than the aroma, light toffee, light earthy malts. Nice balance of sweetness and peat. A touch of apple fruitiness in back. The body is a bit thin, but still tasty.
