DrnkMcDermott (1597), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA Aug 26, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Well, hey there. I just now discovered this new Iowa brewer that’s packaging for retail. All right. How’s the beer?
Nice roasty malt aroma from over a foot away when poured, with some light coffee and cocoa note. Black body, thin dwindling head—just not that easy to get a good pour from a bottled stout with no Widget. First taste impression is that it lacks the velvety smoothness of a cask oatmeal stout, having been force carbonated. After that, shows a nice stout, more to the dry side, with a bit of sourness, strong coffee overall. Probably a touch more alcohol than a session stout. Very good early effort shows some room for improvement that I hope they’ll work on.
CaryTheDude (489), Ripon, Wisconsin, USA Nov 26, 2008 Crushed with Jakebra. Smells very nice. Chocolate, maltiness. Flavor is boring and way watery. After 3 of these brews, I surmise that Hub City Brewery is going nowhere. Bummer. argo0 (6289), Washington DC, USA Nov 17, 2008 (12oz bottle, thanks General Gao) Large tan head atop black body with dark brown edges. Aroma is medium sweet, coffee/roast, some chocolate, light oatmeal. Taste is medium sweet, roast/coffee, light chocolate, oatmeal, burnt. Light-medium body, light acidity. JB175 (1420), Holland, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 29, 2008 Darker brown color. Chocolatey aroma with some roast and milkiness. Creamy flavor with some chocolate, sugar, and coffee. Smooth feel. Decent stout. LilBeerDoctor (733), East Setauket, New York, USA Aug 24, 2008 Bottle courtesy of pepsican. Pours quite black with a small dark tan head that dissipates quickly. Aroma of roasted and burnt malts. Flavor is pretty similar with a sweet finish. Not too complex but drinkable and tasty.
