Commercial Description:
Affiliated with the Nectar Ales experience through shared origins at Humboldt Brewing Company, Hemp Ale is a one-of-a-kind brew that boasts an incredibly rich profile and unique herb-accented flavor that is attributable to the incorporation of hemp seeds into the brewing process. A wonderful brown ale full of complexity Hemp Ale is great with food or by itself. American hops create a perfect balance to the darker malts used in this brew. This brown ale is the Gold Medal winner for first place in its category at both the 1999 and 2000 California State Fair Craft Brewing Competitions. (Editor’s Note: originally brewed by the Humboldt Brewing Company until their acquisition by Firestone Walker)

Tap: Never had hemp so I’m not sure what it tastes like, but I was having trouble guessing the style of this. The color is a rich brown. Just slightly darker than the Rogue Hazelnut Brown ale next to it. Aroma was malt dominated with caramel, light chocolate. I really don’t know what they were trying here, but it didn’t work.

Draught. Clear dark brown color with off white head. Overall lacking in flavor and aroma. There is a touch of hay and caramel malt in the aroma. Flavor is similar wih some nuttiness and an earthy character.

On tap. Reddish brown, transparant color with a nice beige head. Some caramelized malty aromas with a light, grassy hops touch. Mouthfeel is syrupy, but not in a creamy or full kind of way. Flavor of toast and cherry jelly.

Very clear deep amber color with a light a light tan head. A pleasant toasty malt aroma. Nice toasty malt flavor that lingers. This beer is a pleasant suprise. Light to medium mouthfeel. A must try.

Bottled. Pours a dark brown color. Aroma is somewhat malty with a bit of chocolate. A hint of hops as well. Flavor is slightly malty with some chocolate notes. Slightly roasted. A little bit of spice. Not bad, but lacking a little something. Reminds me a little of a brown ale.

Red copper ale with a nice thin off-white head. Nutty malt aroam with hemp oil coming out. Malty nutty ale with some harshness in mouth, not pleasant. Russian River Beer Revival & Barbecue Cook-Off, August 20, 2005.
