Commercial Description:
Affiliated with the Nectar Ales experience through shared origins at Humboldt Brewing Company, Hemp Ale is a one-of-a-kind brew that boasts an incredibly rich profile and unique herb-accented flavor that is attributable to the incorporation of hemp seeds into the brewing process. A wonderful brown ale full of complexity Hemp Ale is great with food or by itself. American hops create a perfect balance to the darker malts used in this brew. This brown ale is the Gold Medal winner for first place in its category at both the 1999 and 2000 California State Fair Craft Brewing Competitions. (Editor’s Note: originally brewed by the Humboldt Brewing Company until their acquisition by Firestone Walker)

(bottle) Deep brown with hints of red. Malty aroma. Malty flavor with not much complexity.

Tap. Dark brown ruby color, thin whitish head, little lacing on my glass. Aroma is gently malty, not much complexity to it. Flavor has a dark malty flavor, a little darker than Newcastle, a twang of bitterness to it, kind of spicy in the finish. Body is average for a beer like this. A run of the mill beer, not much too good nor too bad to say about it.

Dark mahogany hue and no head. Aroma is of sweet malt , cherries, and somehow i scent bud brownies. Flavor is malty with dab of brown sugar and resembling a weak English strong ale. I feel like my breath smells like i just ate some bammer meckie but i didnt taste no buds in the beer itself.

Small Head, a lot darker than what i was expecting. dark amber/brown. Nice refreshing feel. Good for warm day. I would say that it looks like it should taste a tiny bit stronger than it is but i really like the taste myself. I really enjoy this brew and will keep it on hand.

On tap at the Library Alehouse, Santa Monica, 12-02-04...with all their great taps, I had to concentrate on new beers, and ended up choosing this... Dark amber color, nearly brown, very slim head, quickly departing Aroma is herbal, grassy (heh, heh)...not much else. Body is thinnish, hollow, malt dominates in the tastes, but nothing really sticks out...not sure where the hemp comes or goes, as a gimmick, it never really shows itself, and is an empty gesture. Leaves dryly, and ends up feeling dull and disappointing...there were other new beers among their tap line-up, but I went with the one with the marijuana leaf on it...that’ll show me. I didn’t have much enthusiasm for it, but...it’s a serviceable ale, though not to hoop and holler about.

This beer poured a golden yellow color w/ good head and slight lacing. Malty and crisp w/ citrusy notes on the nose, and the same in the mouth. Good effervescence, and a light body complemented this beer. I like it.

(Draft) Light Coca cola color almost no head at all. Roasted chocolate and toastiness in the aroma. The flavor is hops and chocolate with some roasted toffee hints as well. Finishes with a bit of bitterness. Quite nice
