Commercial Description:
Affiliated with the Nectar Ales experience through shared origins at Humboldt Brewing Company, Hemp Ale is a one-of-a-kind brew that boasts an incredibly rich profile and unique herb-accented flavor that is attributable to the incorporation of hemp seeds into the brewing process. A wonderful brown ale full of complexity Hemp Ale is great with food or by itself. American hops create a perfect balance to the darker malts used in this brew. This brown ale is the Gold Medal winner for first place in its category at both the 1999 and 2000 California State Fair Craft Brewing Competitions. (Editor’s Note: originally brewed by the Humboldt Brewing Company until their acquisition by Firestone Walker)

Bottle shared by Peter. Crystal, toasty aroma, very uncomplex, drab, oily, malts. Boring, brown ale flavor, I don’t even see where the hemp comes from here. There are some interesting perfume notes that come out in the finish that almost save this beer but not quite. If you want to make a pot beer make a nice dank IPA, not some random brown ale.

light pine cone, slight metal .. . dark brown .. wimpy head .. . light sweetness, thinnish body ... . needs more fullness and actually needs some hemp flavors, a tad too nutty .. . goes better with a smoke .. .

Draft @ Amnesia, SF. Pours a dark amber color with a small off-white head. Has a malty caramel aroma with some nutty hints. Sweetish malty slightly toasted caramel flavor. Has a sweetish malty caramel finish.

From the bottle dark copper body, good clarity, smooth off-white head. Caramel malts throughout. Toasty and nutty malt depth. Body is thin and a bit watery, expecting a bit more heft from the crystal malts. Finish balanced out by the hops. Simple all around, but good and sessionable.

3/1/09 From the bottle. Aroma is light caramel and roast with no hops, similar to an english brown. Appearance is clear copper brown with a well-maintained off-white head. Flavor is all malt with sweet-sour slightly roast malt dominating an only very light herbal note. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a moderate carb texture. Overall, quite easy drinking and pretty yummy, a good beer for a wide variety of food because of its light flavors.

APPEARANCE: Pours a brown color with a large tan head that dissipates at an average rate. Moderate lacing. A lot darker then I expected. AROMA: Light aroma of toasted malt and a little caramel. FLAVOR: Toasted malt and a little caramel sweetness. Finishes with a bit of earthy hops. I don’t taste any weird spices here. MOUTHFEEL: Light to medium body beer. Soft carbonation. DRINKABILITY: A very easy drinking smooth beer. A bit one dimensional for me. I expected a funky tasting beer and what I got was a mix between a pale ale and brown ale. NOTES: BBCSD-0901-Tim

Tried on Tap. Pours a dark amber red, semi transparent, no top. Smells of roasted peanuts, light choco and cherries. Taste of cherries, dark chocolate, and oranges. Light carbonation, smooth. Similar to a RED ALE AND PORTER HYBRID. Not bad.
