Commercial Description:
Affiliated with the Nectar Ales experience through shared origins at Humboldt Brewing Company, Hemp Ale is a one-of-a-kind brew that boasts an incredibly rich profile and unique herb-accented flavor that is attributable to the incorporation of hemp seeds into the brewing process. A wonderful brown ale full of complexity Hemp Ale is great with food or by itself. American hops create a perfect balance to the darker malts used in this brew. This brown ale is the Gold Medal winner for first place in its category at both the 1999 and 2000 California State Fair Craft Brewing Competitions. (Editor’s Note: originally brewed by the Humboldt Brewing Company until their acquisition by Firestone Walker)

Tried on Tap. Pours a dark amber red, semi transparent, no top. Smells of roasted peanuts, light choco and cherries. Taste of cherries, dark chocolate, and oranges. Light carbonation, smooth. Similar to a RED ALE AND PORTER HYBRID. Not bad.

Tap at the Yardhouse. Deep amber-brown beer, creamy thick white head. Aroma is very nutty and sweet. Soft brown/toasty malt base. A rich sweet toasted nut base. Fairly clean though with a nice soft sweetness. Fresh maltiness with a nice soft sweetness. Fresh maltiness and a light toasted malt base. It’s actually a pretty nice beer... it just isn’t really my style.

Draught. Pours dark amber/brown with a small off-white head. Aroma and flavor are both sweet, slightly roasty caramel malt, with a hint of fruit. Small bit of spices, but I would call this an amber, really (not sure where the hemp comes in). However, it is a pretty good amber, with a fairly nice roasty/sweet malt character.

Bottle: A common ale, most notable is the name. Drinkable but nothing outstanding.

Bottle… Dark, clear crimson ale with a small, creamy, khaki head. Decent retention. Subdued, malty nose provides subtle notes of chocolate, nuts and vanilla. Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. Well-balanced flavor offers traces of chocolate and nuts. Short, crisp, clean finish. Brown ale, I think.

Rating from 2006 while in Calli. Pours a dark amber brwon body. Grainy floral, caramel malt. Pretty simple and thin. Light toasted malt, i missed the truely hemp portion of this brew. I guess it had a note of spices.

poured from 12 oz bottle. surprisingly dark, caramel, coffee aromas. there’s a little metallic aftertaste but not to bad. I have no idea why they call it "hemp" ale, but it’s over all a good beer.
