Commercial Description:
Affiliated with the Nectar Ales experience through shared origins at Humboldt Brewing Company, Hemp Ale is a one-of-a-kind brew that boasts an incredibly rich profile and unique herb-accented flavor that is attributable to the incorporation of hemp seeds into the brewing process. A wonderful brown ale full of complexity Hemp Ale is great with food or by itself. American hops create a perfect balance to the darker malts used in this brew. This brown ale is the Gold Medal winner for first place in its category at both the 1999 and 2000 California State Fair Craft Brewing Competitions. (Editor’s Note: originally brewed by the Humboldt Brewing Company until their acquisition by Firestone Walker)

poured from 12 oz bottle. surprisingly dark, caramel, coffee aromas. there’s a little metallic aftertaste but not to bad. I have no idea why they call it "hemp" ale, but it’s over all a good beer.

Poured from 22oz bottle a dark brown with large tannish head. Aromas of roasted grains, bisquits and caramel. Flavor has a toasted malt graininess, with a touch of sweet caramel and a little coffee. The palate is malty and lightly bitter with a spicy tingle that is not from the carbonation. This one has a sweet start and a slightly dry finish. I found it to be an enjoyable beer. I’d drink one again.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with an average beige head that laces. Nose of roasted malts and a mild herbal quality. Taste has some chocolate roasted bitterness and some mild herbal notes, not really a good taste or mix. Finish is smooth and a little bitter. Beer is medium bodied. Mild carbonation.

Bottle from Beerfest at Sudwerk in Davis, CA. This beer wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. Hemp typically makes you think good thoughts, but this brew didn’t. Eh.

Bottle from the Beer Fest in Davis, CA.Poured a copper color with an off-white head. Not spectacular about this one. Sweet malty flavor with a slighty metallic aftertaste. I did notice a little bit of the spicy flavor. Not bad, but nothing I would buy again.

a dark pour, the toasted malt flavors dominate, drinkable and fine but not really my style, probably just not a fan of hemp ales but this beer was alright

What better place to have a hemp ale then in San Francisco, right in the Haight. That’s where I had this one: pours a darker copper colour with a fairly large head. aroma was sweet and enticing, floral and vaguely reminiscent of the green. Taste was tolerable, but i wasn’t overly impressed with this beer unfortunately. i expected more. Taste was acidic, light fruitiness and sort of watery in the finish.

A tasty ale that’s got nothing to do with herbs or vegetebles, as far as I can taste anyhow. Thick body with a pleasant taste and finish. Just not my bag. There are so many of these beers that all taste so similar. Mine is by Humboldt Brewing Company, but says it’s from Paso Robles, which is a contradiction indeed. Also mine has a different label, one that’s kind of hippyish in image, perhaps for reasons more obvious than not. Good aftertaste I’ll say, which is not so common.
