Mar 20, 2008 Pours murky brown with an off-white head. Dank malty aroma with the noticeable vegetable-hemp aroma. Same goes for the taste. BIg caramel malt flavors mixed with peppery hops. The straw/vegetable/hemp flavor is throughout, but doesn’t really add anything in a positive way.

Mar 13, 2008 Draught at Woodstocks IV. Dark brown with a medium beige head that laces the glass. Roasty and toasty aroma with some herbal quality. The flavor is between a brown ale and a porter, with some chocolate roasted bitterness showing, but remaining pretty smooth. The hemp is subtle, as has been every example I’ve had, but it adds a nice dimension, and makes for an interesting and drinkable darker ale. medium to lighter body and lighter carbonation.

Feb 22, 2008 I’ll rate this for historical purposes. One of the gateway craft beers, along with Red Tail and Arrogant Bastard, back in the day. Used to go through a couple pitchers of this at a time at the Tilted Stick because Chip had a tough time giving this stuff away because it was too different at the time. I flocked to it.
There was that time I put my clothes in the wash at the launderette next door to the Stick and decided I’d stop in for some lunch and a beer while my clothes tumbled. Fast forward to about 11pm and a solid 3 or 4 pitchers of Humboldt Hemp Ale to my head and it was a bitter pill to see the launderette closed. Didn’t even get my clothes to the dryer until the next day. Solid times.

Feb 12, 2008 5.99 6pk everyday at cork and bottle. the smell and taste of this really give me more of a brown ale feel. Really really lightly carbonated. Pours cool dark brown amber with hardly any head even if you pour it straight into the bottom of the glass. Malty nose, malty sweet front, not really any hop bite, watery mouth feel, drinkable i guess, but nothing too special.. bud is 4.99 a six pack, so I guess it’s worth the extra buck. I’d probably rather have it than newcastle, while we’re on the topic of brown ale. Is this style really called a "spice herb vegetable"? Is that how you say it? LOL

Feb 4, 2008 This was different and richer, but less strongly-flavoured than I had expected. It is very dark red with a medium, dense, lasting head that slowly dissipates but never vanishes. It leaves a little weak lace. The aroma is light caramel, toasted grain, and delicate citrusy-flowery element. The taste is almost like a light, mild porter, being mostly lightly sweet with mild, burnt caramel, dark toast, hints of chocolate, with a light flowery element and bitterness in the finish. It has good flavours but they are all rather muted and the whole thing is very smooth and soft, almost too soft. It gets kind of boring after a bit.

Jan 7, 2008 Thanks again to Eric for a taste of this nice beer--Poured a deep syrupy brown amber body with a small milky head. Lots of aroma. Fruity, thick, floral, and malty. Flavor of rich bubblegum. Like some of my favorite hoppy barley wines but a lot lower on the alcohol end. Finished sweet and mildly spicy and faintly cloying.

Jan 6, 2008 Aroma is sweet, syrupy, lots of dark crystal malt, milky. Flavor is fairly dry, coffee-roastiness, rather one-dimensional. Clean, spicily bitter finish.
