Commercial Description:
Affiliated with the Nectar Ales experience through shared origins at Humboldt Brewing Company, Hemp Ale is a one-of-a-kind brew that boasts an incredibly rich profile and unique herb-accented flavor that is attributable to the incorporation of hemp seeds into the brewing process. A wonderful brown ale full of complexity Hemp Ale is great with food or by itself. American hops create a perfect balance to the darker malts used in this brew. This brown ale is the Gold Medal winner for first place in its category at both the 1999 and 2000 California State Fair Craft Brewing Competitions. (Editor’s Note: originally brewed by the Humboldt Brewing Company until their acquisition by Firestone Walker)

Thanks again to Eric for a taste of this nice beer--Poured a deep syrupy brown amber body with a small milky head. Lots of aroma. Fruity, thick, floral, and malty. Flavor of rich bubblegum. Like some of my favorite hoppy barley wines but a lot lower on the alcohol end. Finished sweet and mildly spicy and faintly cloying.

Aroma is sweet, syrupy, lots of dark crystal malt, milky. Flavor is fairly dry, coffee-roastiness, rather one-dimensional. Clean, spicily bitter finish.

Light amber coloured body with a thinnish off-white head. Aroma of some mild hops, coupled with some malt and a bit of sweetness. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong malty taste up front with a bit of nuts and a dose of fresh hops shows nice. Aftertaste shows a bit more amber type flavour with some faint pit fruit tastes coming through. Overall, not a great showing, but not horrible either. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in San Francisco (4th St), California on 25-December-2007.

12 ounce bottle shared by grant. Sweet, lightly fruity, light caramel aromas with perhaps a little spiciness present. Not much in the way of hops are present. Despite this, it is pretty aromatic. Attractive ruddy-amber transparent body with a small manilla head and nice lacing present. Roasty, nutty, husky, malty start. Some mild metallic notes come through. FInishes lightly sweet with some mild, metallic, spicy hops. Not too bad. Exceeds expectations.

Bottle. Dark brown pour, literally no head to speak of. Aroma was hops, maybe a touch of malt. Flavor was just like a brown ale, like said below. Not a bad beer, but nothing special either.

Pours a dark brown, ends up being a really dark ruby with a small white head. tastes malty, a little hoppy and woody. Kind of thin, tastes like a regular brown ale. I think the name is misleading.
