Commercial Description:
Boasting a ruby hue and an exquisite floral aroma, Red Nectar is a robust yet elegant brew with distinctive accents of toasted malt, caramel, spice and residual sweetness. The beer that started it all… Red Nectar was considered a strange bird when it was first released in 1987. After all, where did a robust, handcrafted all-natural amber ale fit into the massive flock of American industrial lagers? Answer: it didn’t. So it blazed its own trail, helping set the pace for the craft brew revolution. Enjoy Red Nectar for its dazzling reddish copper hue, original flavors and caramel spice accents. (Editor’s Note: originally brewed by Humboldt Brewing Company as "Humboldt Red Nectar Ale" until their acquisition by Firestone Walker.)

12oz bottle, no date. Clear copper red with a one finger light beige head, pretty good retention. Toasted malts and caramel dominate the aroma with some light floral and citrus hops. The flavor is much the same--toasty malts dominate the caramel malts, and there is some light citrus and lighter earthy hops. Bitterness in the finish peaked at a 3. Smooth light to moderate carbonation with a medium body. Pretty good amber.

22oz bottle. Pours a deep, clear reddish-amber color; very light off-white head with beautiful, fluffy formation, great retention, and charismatic lacing; a great pour. Very nice aroma of light brown sugar, red fruits, and earthy and citrus balancing hoppiness; crisp, well-balanced, if a touch resigned. Medium mouthfeel: beautiful balance of red fruit maltiness, developed sugars, and this lightly acidic earthy hop character; intensely drinkable; nice acidity and pleasant spritzy carbonation; juicy, well-integrated bitter hoppiness; honestly, an archtype of what an amber ale should be; loads of flavor, good balance while keeping on the hoppy side, and just very drinkable and lively in the mouth; great, great rendition. Constantly interesting. Lasting finish of biscuity malts, mineral and earthy bitterness, still nicely juicy.

22oz bottle. Pours clear dark red, amber with a small white head and some lace. Smells metallic and sweet with some caramel malts with some red fruity hops. Tastes the same but with some oxidation as well. Never been a fan. Medium body, good carbonation.

Poured a slightly cloudy amber color with a solid, two-finger tall head and good lacing. The aroma was a rush of citrus hops along with caramel malts and some floral and pine. The flavor followed suit. Almost medium in body. Finished clean. Tasted like a light IPA. Solid.

Honey-amber color with a thick head. The aroma was of light floral and citrus hops. Good balance of all three hop qualities of the aroma along with some grapefruit dominance. Builds on a very light caramel base that had some bready notes mixed in. Full bodied and smooth.

Deep copper with a light tan head and lace. Light caramel malt aroma. Semi sweet caramel malt flavor with a light to medium bitter finish. Medium bodied but a tad fizzy for me.

Bottle. Clear, brownish-red with a lasting spit of head. Nose is leafy caramel and earthy spiced fruit. Flavor is bold tea leaf, then some caramel and wood, followed by a lightly roasty finish. Smooth, light-medium body finishes roasty dry.
