Commercial Description:
Samichlaus, which means "Santa Claus" in Swiss German, is brewed on December 6th, naturally aged before bottling, and distributed one year later. This beer was once the world's strongest beer and has been listed in The Guinness Book of Records. Unlike other lagers, it should be stored at cellar temperatures in order to enhance its definite ale-like qualities.
** This beer has been discontinued (last brewed in 1996).**

1997 bottle shared by moejuck at CT4, thanks! Pours an amber-brown with no head. Aroma of dark fruits, and bready caramel malt, brown sugar and a bit of booze. The flavor had a bunch of bready caramel malt, some spices, booze and some candied fruit...cherry. Thick, almost syrupy mouthfeel...also a bit medicinal and still hot! I was really glad I got to try this one, especially to see that it still has one helluva kick left.

1995 vintage. One of the best beers of the night, and really what Samichlaus has to live up to. Great brownish black body, with a very small head. Heavy aroma, like a chocolate cordial. Great flavor, similar to the KRE in that it’s like rum soaked cake with chocolate covering and cherry accents. Great thick feel to this beer. Damn shame that it’s been gone for ten years.

Shared by moejuck at C-bus tasting #4. Bourbon and alcohol aroma with some soy sauce. The appearance is dark brown wiht some ruby red highlights. Very full palate compliments a sweet brown sugar taste that has a ton of great malt flavor. Even though this was a ’97 bottle the alcohol is definitely a strong player, but I still really enjoyed the flavors.

1997 Bottle shared by someone: Brown with no head. Aroma of caramel, some fruits, brown sugar and some alcohol. Flavor, spicy, reasty, some rich malts. Pretty good stuff, still a monster though.

Sampled at the Richmond Beer Industry Gathering 2006. 1995 Bottle. This is what Samichlaus always should have been. Dark brown body with a small off-white head. Sweet malty aroma with caramel, raisins, molassas. Strong molassas flavor, rum soaked fruit with a mild caramel background.

12oz bottle 1997 vintage at columbus tasting 4.0 - Forget who shared this one - Pours brown with a short offwhite head that faded quick. Aromas of raisin, brown sugar, caramel and a lot of alcohol. Flavor is just like it smells. Lots of alcohol.. Low carbonation full body, soft palate for such a big beer.. But did I mention that the alcohol overwhelms this one??

12oz bottle, 1996 vintage, courtesy of kramer17801. Thanks, Jason! Pours an oily brown appearance, somewhat viscous; slight off-white head that quickly disappears to nothing. I could smell this as I was pouring it. Huge, layered aroma: boozy fruit leather, biscuity, dried fruits and charred malts. Viscous mouthfeel, parallel to the notes in the nose: alcoholic fruit rollups (someone’s going to hate this, but it reminds me of KRE), almost creamy, hints of milk chocolate underneath; some caramel notes as well, some of which is from oxidation. Finish lasts forever.
