Poured without a head at all and the aroma is strong dried fruits, nuts and alcohol. The taste gets you right from the beginning with chocolate, prunes, figs, pine, caramel and toffee. Hardly any bitterness but the alcohol has a warming effect on the tongue and chest. Surprisingly not oxidized at all. Every sip my tongue thanks my mind for loving beer so much. Very full and sweet in the aroma; chocolate, cake and alcohol. Smells a little old, but still delicious. Flavor is also very sweet and has notes of chocolate, prunes, spices and liquorice. Thick and soft and very heavy. Tasty and interesting but should be drunk in small doses! egajdzis (3629), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA

Poured a hazy brown color with a small off white head and very light lacing on the glass. Very nice aroma of musty toffee and caramel, cobwebs as well. Taste was that of roast chocolate and caramel, and almost finished with a medicinal alcohol burn. Much nicer at an age like this. madsberg (5044), Søborg, Denmark

Liqourice, alcahol and sweetness in the flavour. Reminds me of cough medicine. Sweet and alcaholdense aftertaste. This one was traded with the fantastic CaptainCougar. Molasses, brown sugar and alcohol in the aroma.
Very sweet. Huge malt flavors. Alcohol too but it’s almost overpowered by the sweetness.
Thick, rich and big mouthfeel. Alcohol warms you right up..
Beer has stood up well after eight years. One bottle left in the cellar.

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 14, 2004 1997 tried alongside a 2003 Eggenberg version. I’m assuming this was the last Hurlimann vintage, and was brewed in 1996 and bottled in 1997. Dark red brown colour with a tan coloured frothy head. Aroma of soy sauce, what someone else described as vegemite, cherries, raisins, toffee, and alcohol. Roasted, almost burnt toffee, flavour dominates, with honey, alcohol, molasses, and slight soy sauce trying to creep in as well. Thick and syrupy but smooth.
