Commercial Description:
Samichlaus, which means "Santa Claus" in Swiss German, is brewed on December 6th, naturally aged before bottling, and distributed one year later. This beer was once the world's strongest beer and has been listed in The Guinness Book of Records. Unlike other lagers, it should be stored at cellar temperatures in order to enhance its definite ale-like qualities.
** This beer has been discontinued (last brewed in 1996).**

Just drank a 1983 bottle from my collection. truly a remarkable beer that has a shelf life like Grand Hermitage wine. I have in stock 25 of the origional 1980 brew year and may just have to crack one open. My favorite beer, even over Hair of the Dog Dave or Westvleteren 12.

1993 bottle at Woodshop Quad. And who says a half ounce isn’t enough? Nose of toffee, alcohol, and caramel. Copper with only a couple bubbles. Flavor was sweet and alcoholic toffee and chocolate notes. Wish I had a whole bottle!

Aroma is moderate to light heavy malty, dark bread, sweet danish rye bread, caramel, vintage, alcohol. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet with a long duration. Body is medium to full, texture is syrupy, carbonation is flat. Strength takes away from overall enjoyment of beer.

Bottled in 1996. Appearance: Pours an opaque, dark brown body sans a head. Smell: Rich, soil-strewn nose of chocolate, maple, and caramel. Slight salty soy hints. Wisp of smoke. Plum compote notes. Taste: Overall earthy flavors of chocolate, roast, and dark caramel all toned down and mellowed with time. Rich, satisfying maple syrup sweetness. Smoked plum fruitiness. Warming finish with a long, lingering fruitiness like a quality port. Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Low carbonation. Drinkability: A drink to really savor with every slow, thoughtful sip. Or gulp! That’s cool too. I mean, it is that tasty.

(Bottle, 1995 vintage, at Pikkulintu, Helsinki, on 2008-11-29) Deep dark red colour. Clear. No head. Sherry and raisin in nose. Full bodied, little bit sticky and warm palate with little carbonation. Sherry, raisin, malts, sweetness, bitterness and chocolate in taste. Sherry and light bitterness in aftertaste.

Courtesy of Nate. Pours dark brown, opaque, and very chunky. No head at all. Aroma of raisins, soy sauce, and chewed up Trolli gummies. Coffee, molasses, prunes and burnt toast. Oh yeah, tootsie rolls all soaked in whiskey, too. There are some good chocolatey notes, but overall, cloyingly sweet. I need insulin, NOW. Thick and rich, but maybe just a little over the top... maybe.
