Commercial Description:
Samichlaus, which means "Santa Claus" in Swiss German, is brewed on December 6th, naturally aged before bottling, and distributed one year later. This beer was once the world's strongest beer and has been listed in The Guinness Book of Records. Unlike other lagers, it should be stored at cellar temperatures in order to enhance its definite ale-like qualities.
** This beer has been discontinued (last brewed in 1996).**

[Vintage 1996, sampled January 2nd 2004] The aroma is strong and sirupy with notes of alcohol, plums and prunes. The color is a clear dark brown and it has a small but extremely fast disappearing head. The flavor is extremely sweet - too sweet or not balaced well enough for me. But the flavor contains notes of prunes, plums, alcohol, wood and caramel - a lovely complexity. The alcohol runs slightly over the tongue. I must admit, that I like a fresh version of the Eggenberg better than this one - I don't know if it is the age or the recipe - I'll get wiser as time passes, since I'm storing some Eggenbergs for enjoyment in the future. A big thank You goes to Alex (fiulijn) for trading me this one - I really appreciate the opportunity to try this beer.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Pours reddish mahogany with a slight haze and a small, rough off-white head. Vinous, rich and very complex aroma. Very full-bodied, shiploads of roasted malt and accents of dried and overripe fruit. Very sweet and very delicate. Slightly oxidized. Impressive though, that the hops still maintain a degree of bitterness. 090506

25 cL bottle, courtesy of Bov - huge thanks for providing me this rare beer for my rating no 12345. Pours dark brown with a golden amber glare and a small bubbly tan head. Aroma is dark malty and quite wineous. Sweet caramelish and smooth roasted malty. Dark breadish and light spiced too. Thick syrupy caramelish. Lingering malty into the far finish. Great stuff.

1986 bottle. Woody aroma. Cloudy brown colour, no head. Thick mouthfeel. The flavour is a lot like port. Woody, raisiny flavour. Long, sweet aftertaste. Thanks to Martin from Haandbryggeriet, DK.

Bottled (thanks Bov!). 1996 vintage. Dark amberish brown colour, not much head. Aroma is alcohol, raisins, madeirawine and slightly spicy. Also very ryeish. Flavour is raisins, vanilla, alcohol, spices, rye and some wooden hints. Aged well, and the alcohol is not disturbing, even though it’s noteable.
