jbuzz (658), South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Oct 13, 2008 This is a nice little stout. Nice color and head. Bold rich flavor. Slightly watery but not enough to make it unpleasant. Tastes of oatmeal,, and bitter chocolate. very light carbonation, Beerlando (2281), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 8, 2008 Updated: Oct 9, 2008Pours an extremely dark mahogany, showing hints of chestnut brown at the edges when backlit. A smooth, foamy tan head shrinks considerably, but maintains a solid blanket for the entire duration. Thin, jagged lines and random spots of lace mark the glass. The aroma is mostly roasty, with toasted oatmeal, hints of vanilla, black chocolate malts, and notes of espresso. There are some indiscernible dark fruits in there if you search hard enough, as well as some scorched caramel. Flavors follow suit, oatmeal lending a smoothing quality to the choco-coffee-caramel concoction. There’s some earthy hop bitterness on the back end, with just a hint of a metallic mineral note. The mouthfeel is a little weak for the style, with a lively carbonation that isn’t too overbearing. Overall, it’s a nice enough little stout, but nothing outstanding. hopdog (5525), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 22, 2008 12oz bottle. Poured a dark black color with an averaged sized tan head. Aromas of roast, oatmeal, a little earthy, burnt malts, and light chocolate. Tastes of oatmeal, roast, and bitter chocolate. esjaygee (1467), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA Mar 16, 2008 Updated: Apr 11, 2009Dark brown with mahogany highlights and an airy tan head that collapses into a thin layer for most of the duration. Aroma of roasted malt, oatmeal and chocolate. Taste of roasted malt, chocolate, oatmeal with a roasty bitter finish that doesn’t last too long. Smooth body is perhaps a touch on the thin side and it could use a little more flavor.
(3-16-08, 8-5-7-4-14 = 3.8)At City Lounge. Dark brown with thin head. Oatmeal aroma. Starts smooth and goes down smooth. The best of the III Dachshunds so far. The oatmeal adds a nice touch. Skyview (4003), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA Sep 9, 2007 On draught at the City Lounge in Cudahy, Wisconsin. Pours an opaque dark brown brew with a fast dissolving tan head that leaves behind a fine film and no ring or lacing. Aroma of dark roasted malt, some vanilla and a touch of oatmeal. Taste is medium bodied, very light carbonation, a little on the watery side with a hint of oatmeal, dark chocolate and roasted dark malt. Finish is watery, light, with a dry roasted malt aftertaste. Could use a little more texture for a stout. prosqtor (408), Appleton, Wisconsin, USA Aug 31, 2007 An excellent oatmeal stout! From the tap at the Landmark 1850; nice body, great roasted taste with a hint of sweet oatmeal, and smooth malty finish. As close to a session stout as I’ve found at the Landmark. surlysober (41), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Mar 15, 2007 FIRST TRIAL: On tap at the Landmark 1850. Wow! I am very, very, very surprised that this beer was a silver medal winner at a past GABF. There simply wasn’t much to it. The color was a nice black, but there was almost no head, almost no flavor, and it had a very watery mouthfeel. What little flavor there was, was slightly sweet and oatmeal-y, but there’s almost none of the roasted maltiness that I enjoy in even the less extreme craft stouts. Maybe it was the glassware, maybe it was the taplines (I sometimes doubt the Landmark’s diligence in these areas), but, it would be a struggle to recommend this beer. I almost want to try it again just to see if I’ve given it a bum rap. Scubatrip (387), Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA Sep 12, 2006 On draught at the Landmark 1850 in Milwaukee, I thought this was a pretty good beer. Pours very dark with a decent head that leaves a thin lacing down the side of the glass. Nothing special about the aroma or taste--both were as expected from an oatmeal stout. Very smooth and drinkable. I’d definitely order this one again.
