Commercial Description:
Bottle: Pasteurised.
Brewed by Belhaven for Innis & Gunn
Ingredients: Golden Promise and Crystal malt; Phoenix hops.
We are delighted to present this unique limited bottling of Innis & Gunn finished in oak barrels which previously contained navy rum. Maturation in special oak barrels imparts Navy rums with the sweet, spicy character for which they are renowned. We have long wondered what flavours might be imparted to our beer by finishing it in these same barrels and earlier this year we decided to find out. We brewed a special batch of Innis & Gunn beer and matured it in oak for 60 days. Every single drop spent half of that time in American oak barrels before being refilled into selected navy rum barrels to finish the lengthy maturation. Once the beer had absorbed the unique character the barrels were emptied, the beer blended and then maturation continued for a further 47 days until all of the flavours had married together and mellowed. We think the result is absolutely delicious!

Pours like Coca-cola, dark brown with red highlights, energetic fizz, and no head. Dark rum, oak, and a cherry sourness in the aroma. Flavour is heavy and sweet, with more smooth, dark oak. Distinctly sour hit - maybe there were some tasty wood-bugs? Absent any perceptible bitterness, the sour is all there is to balance the sweetness, which works just fine. Definite caramelisation. No perceptible bitterness. An interesting drink, more balanced than their standard, sort of a crash course in rum-barrel flavours.

Bottle. Pours a nice clear copper colour with a short beige head that quickly diminishes to surface cover. Aroma is quite spicy with notes of malt, cinnamon, vanilla, caramel and ginger. Flavour is more malty but is otherwise the same as the aroma. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a dry, spicy finish. Overall a pretty good, but still unusual, beer. One of the better ones from this brewery.

330 ml bottle. Brown coloured and clear. Medium-sized light beige fluffy head that clings to the glass. Nutty and wooden aromas. Earthy. Dark chocolate and toffee. Body is fairly light, but there is a lot of complexity flavourwise. Dry, and almost puckering wooden tannins. Citrusy aromas towards the end with some acidity. Overal a light and surprisingly well hidden alcohol content. Balanced, but with some unusual flavours. Nice beer.

330 ml clear bottle in cardboard box, now available in Norway (Vinmonopolet, bestillingsutvalget) - also at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7.4%. Clear mahogany coloured beer with an off-white to beige head. Intense aroma of oak rum cask, notes of vanilla, spices, alcohol, brown sugar, treacle, rum-raisin and dark dried fruits. The flavour is distinctly oaky, but more mellow and rounded (without the strong notes of fresh wood) compared to the ordinary Innis & Gunn. Moderate sweetness, moderate notes of rum and spices, dry finish, very moderate hops. Should not be drunk too cold.

330ml bottle @ home.Poured a deep mahogany with only a very small head and little carbonation., Molasses and malt on the nose, with a sweetness from the rum and a general fruitines in the swallow. I didn’t feel it drank to its strength, making it a deceptively easy beer to drink despite its abv.. A very pleasant beer.

33 cl bottle at home. Deep brown color with some red in it, fine off-White head. Aroma is dried fruit, wood and rum, malt. Flavor is sweet malty, dried fruit, spices, wood, hints of sourness. A bit too much alcohol in a beer at only 7,4%. All in all a fine beer.

330ml bottle at Håndverkerstuene, which is the new great place for beer enjoyment in Oslo. Nice ruby coloured body with solid, beige patchwork. Aroma of barrel vanilla with rum. Dark vanilla in flavour in interplay with spiced malt. Dry, rounded bitter ending. Tolerable sweet. Feels well balanced and well bodied in the mouth. Likable (Oslo, 17.11.2009).

11th August 2008. People whom know more about beer than me say all these Innis & Gun beers are full diacetyl. I guess I must like diacetyl!!! Very sweet and complex. Starts with sweet rum, wood and even a little chewing gum. Continues onwith sweet buttercream.

330 ml bottle in a fancy box from LCBO, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. Bought last year in Winter Warmers release.

App.: Very deep brown-copper with a rim of tan. Aroma: Smells like rum. That’s not just power of suggestion folks. This reeks of a Jamaican Reserve or DR Anejo (maybe Extra Viejo), dates and raisins, slightly brighter fruits, a bit pepper and spicy, there’s a hint of stinky ash (really), tart berries, wood. Palate: Medium body and moderate-full effervescence. Flav.: Lots of stewed dry dark fruits, vanilla, rum, wood, some warm spices; lightly sweet with low bitterness and residual rumminess, some warming alcohol.

Not great, but better than the usual I&G.
