D_T_B (51), South Philly, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 15, 2006 I found this on nitro. This beer came a dark black with only a speck of purple shining across the bottom of my pint. The head was truly beautiful. It stayed about a centimeter tall from when the bartender handed it to me, until I finished it off. That was unexpected and greatly appreciated. The creamy head was a dirty tan color with little bubbles suspended in the cream that looked a lot like sand. Very nice presentation!
This one smelled just like bourbon. I didn’t have to sniff around looking for what could be whiskey, but the smell jumped right out at me as if there was a shot floated on top. The vanilla came across really well too. It wasn’t too sweet or artificial as I anticipated, but musky and organic. Behind the bourbon and vanilla was a bit of marshmallow and a slight hint of dry tangy hop.
Tasted of smooth milk chocolate and burnt marshmallow that faded into a great bourbon and sweet vanilla/butterscotch sweetness. The best part was that it finished clean that just made the next sip all that more exciting.
The mouth feel was very thick for a nitro as it kept some of its carbonation trapped in micro-fine bubbles that sustained the beautiful head and made the texture almost chewy. Also, it wasn’t sticky at all which made the sweetness all the more enjoyable.
Truly a pleasure to drink! The_Epeeist (982), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 14, 2006 On tap in West Chester. Dark brown; impenetrable. Holding tan head that forms a skin like pudding. Oatmeal, rye and faint currants. Mocha and licorice lead to a minty bourbon pop. Dries with vanilla; dark fruits creep in. Medium body with a bit of carb. You gotta like bourbon. weeare138 (928), Collegeville, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 12, 2006 Appears a dense black with dark caramel edges and a thick, foamy, light tan head that builds as the beer cascades down the glass from the nitro-pour. Lots of sticky lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is intense of bourbon sweetness, oak, vanilla, caramel, cocoa, and cream. I just couldn’t stop smelling it b/c it was so addictive. This already fantastic Baltic Porter has gotten better by letting it sit in the Eagle Rare oak barrels that held bourbon for at least 10 years.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas in a taste that comes together like a designed recipe that couldn’t miss. The vanilla, and roasted nuts play off of both the bourbon oak, and the Baltic Porter, making it complex and enticing. Throw in that cocoa and distilled bourbon mash and it’s even more enthralling.
Mouthfeel is smooth, full bodied, sweet, and mildly bitter with the cocoa presence. You’ll be licking your lips from the sticky, sweet bourbon flowing over your lips.
This is a well done brew. Served a shade too cold IMO but let it warm if you have the patience and watch this brew marvel your tastebuds. egajdzis (3021), Terrapin, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 6, 2006 Poured a hazy, dark brownish- red color with a medium sized, yellow tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Decadent aroma of bourbon, roasted malts, chocolate, hazelnuts, light caramel, vanilla, and oak as well. Taste of more roasted malts, chocolate, nuts, vanilla, and oak, with some bourbon alcohol in the finish. Creamy and full mouthfeel. xproudfoot (730), Paleolithic, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 4, 2006 On tap at West Chester. Big bourbon jack daniels cherries strong whiskey booze aroma. Right size tan head on a deeb brown beer. Smooth, creamy, almost like a more drinkable whiskey. Fiery (for a beer) finish, without a real burn though. unique beer in my experience. Lingering bourbon finish, slightly more of that "oozy" whiskey palate than a usual beer, upper gravity. I for one believe there must have been whisky left in that barrel! This is darn good and fun, though unfortunately I couldn’t taste much of the baltic porter as the barrel came through the strongest. Cool.
