| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 10, 2008 From a 750mL Bottle. Generously shared by cquiroga. Dark black pour, with somewhat transparent edges of rusty tan, topped with a thick head of creamy tan. Roasty nose, filled with dark chocolate malt notes and wafts of minty hops. The roast has a borderline astringent character, especially paired with the hops. The lesser-roast malts reveal Very fudgy and melanoidin rich flavors with an almost spicy wood-like quality. Medium-full bodied, softly carbonated mouthfeel. Lots of bitter hops up front, followed by a wave of dark chocolate and dry oak bark. Chewy chocolate truffles filled with molasses. Flecks of flambeed raisins. Bitter finish, with a lingering roast astringency. A bit too much roast character, and I’m not a huge fan of the pairing with hop bitterness, but the richness of the dark malt flavors are quite nice. The bottled version is a certain improvement over the diacetyl ridden draft sample I tried (rating reflects the bottled version). Thanks for sharing, Chris! GMCC2181 (883), Bear/Elkton, Delaware, USA

Smelled like chocolate and malt. Flavor is perfect amount of roasted malt. Good thickness to it. The 9 percent is almost unoticable until it lingers in with a sweet after taste. I really enjoyed this beer. TonyDiUlio (197), New Jersey, USA

For some reason I can’t get bast the roasted flavor that reminds me of coffee. Although there seemed nothing too great about this stout it did receive compliments from friends of mine. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, and a slight fruitiness. Sweet chocolate malts with nice toffee character balance well with the roasty finish that dried out the palate. Smooth and full, nice drying finish. Pretty straight forward, but still pretty solid. Thanks for sharing dude. WeeHeavySD (3042), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA

Pretty damn beautifal pour with a nice pop on the hand bottle so I know it was done right. Black with a big heaping tannish brown head. Nose is roasty, malty and pretty nice. Taste is sweet, bitter and full of dark toffee malts, almost burnt coffee as well. Not bad not amazing. gotbeach (138), San Diego, California, USA

Taste is complex and beautiful-roasted malts, coffee, chocolate and hops. A bit thin on the body, but can’t wait to have this again.
