Commercial Description:
This American barleywine has a dominant malty sweetness that is balanced by a huge presence of American hops. The hops give this beer a citrus-like hop flavor. Further dry-hopped for added hop aroma.

Another big IH 750ml bottle courtesy of Swolf3. Poured dark brown, with a tan head. Dry aroma, dried fruit as well. Very luxurious flavor, just permeates the tastebuds. Very enjoyable.

Bottle shared by that Beer Drinker of the Year 2001 guy. He’s the man. Acrid, strong, alcohol filled aroma, loaded with bitter hops and gasoline. Kind of old flavor, oxidized already though new, but still rather light and mellow. The polar opposite of the aroma. Soupy and heavy, though soft on the tongue. Pretty nice, if you can get past the smell.

750 ml bottle.  Pours a muddy brown caramel with a thick beige head.  Aroma of caramel, toffee, tangy citrus and grassy hops. Taste of tangy citrus with a strong caramel malty presence.

bottle from 2005 brought to the tasting by sparky27... the color is like a caramel right before the cream is added with a huge tan head that eventually fades to a ring. the perfumey aroma is sweet with grains and caramel oakiness followed by raisins, pine, grass and some citrus hops. palate is sweet but not sticky or cloying. this is surprisingly still quite hoppy.... flavor is similar to the aroma... raisins and a distinct dry woodiness precede a slight bite on the finish. medium body is soft from the carbonation and creamy without being sticky. i bet this is bitchin’ when it’s fresh...

Sampled at the Hellbilly tasting. Thank you Sparky27! Dark red-brown pour and foamy tan head. Sweet caramel malt aroma. Fruity caramel flavor with some hoopy bitterness on the finish. Interesting!

Bottle coutsey of Sparky27 at hellbilly’s. Nutty caramel aroma. Murky brown with average head. Got mostly just a caramel flavor and some dried fruits and maybe some wood taste in there. One of those odd brews to figure out but glad I got a chance to try it.

Sparky27...Thanks for a chance to taste a brew with only 10 ratings!!! Hellbilly...thanks for the Phoenix Tasting!!! Always a good thing to get those passionate about beer together!!! Gem quality garnet with eggshell foam. Hoppier than expected given the style...also lower ABV than typical in a barley wine. Age will benefit this tremendously.

Sampled at the Hellbilly Phoenix tasting (4/13/08). 2005 vintage bottle from me courtesy of GMCC2181. Thanks Gabe. Pours a clear amber color with a decent beige head. Nose is malt, citrus and pine hops with slight alcohol. Palate is hoppier than I expected with sweet malt, dark fruits like plum and raisins. Slight alcohol bite in the finish. Reminds me a little of Big Foot as others have suggested, though not as good. I winder what this was like when first bottled - the hops must have been really strong.
