Glouglouburp (2085), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Sep 29, 2008 In short: An overly sugary sweet beer of some kind
How: Tat at brewpub, North Wales location
The look: Clear dark-golden body topped by a small white head
In long: This beer is sweet, very sweet, way too sweet. Nose of candy. Taste of spicy hard-candies, candy sugar, barley candy, sweet dried orange cubes. Totally unbalanced. This was described as a “Belgian Double IPA with American Hops” but the little touch of fruity hops was crushed by that massive sugary sweetness. No sure what to make of the high ratings. Did I get a bad batch? As if this wasn’t bad enough the beer was getting worse as it warmed with the alcohol coming through, hence the old beer proverb: Vengeance is a beer better served cold.
JAXSON (115), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 1, 2008 Strange beer, really grew on me throughout the glass. Pours clear, dark amber with a creamy head. Piney, fresh hop aroma. Flavor started like a typical IPA but developed into something sweeter, exotic, and elegant. Oranges and candi sugar. Seamless execution. The best from Iron Hill to date. JB175 (1406), Holland, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 7, 2008 Bright golden color with a medium white head. Aroma is very sweet with loads of citrus hops and candi sugar in abundance. Flavor is quite sweet with an almost excessive amount of sugar - also oranges, citrusy hops, candy, and a strong Belgian trippel-ish taste. Nice, but not their best hoppy Belgian. kmweaver (2212), Sparks, Nevada, USA Aug 4, 2008 Draft @ North Wales location. Pours a bold, clear orange-amber color; light-tan head with solid retention and fine-bubbled lacing; good-looking pour. Very generous, dripping hop aroma, showing lime, oranges, and intense tropical fruit; creamy, estery Belgian underneath; alcohol is well-hidden. Generous Belgian hybrid presence in the mouth, following the aroma, but a touch rough; medium-to-full mouthfeel: cotton candy, vanilla, and creamy Belgian maltiness; again, lots of lime and tropical fruit bitterness; alcohol shows through on the edges, just slightly; generous, but showing its seams. Lengthy finish: tongue-numbing tropical fruit bitterness, vanilla, and toasty malts. DocLock (4173), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 1, 2008 Draft at IHNW. Pours orangy copper with fluffy, 1-finger off-white head and great lacing. Nose is hopcitrus, cobwebby esters, yeasty spice, peaty earthy notes. Tastes hopcitric, with cobwebby yeast esters, woody earthy spicy notes, and some floral hints. Solid complexity and a smooth mouthfeel. This one is very good.
