Commercial Description:
The name CascaZilla is a play on both the name of our local Cascadilla Gorge and the monster amounts of Cascade hops in this beer. This red ale gets its distinctive color from a healthy portion of caramel malt, which also lends some body and sweetness to the beer. The predominant flavor and aromoa of this beer, however, is brought to you by the fresh American hops. If you haven't done so yet, treat yourself to Ithaca Beer's new monstrously hoppy Red Ale.

Bottle courtesy of Thaichile, thanks! Pours a copper color with a decent sized off white head that settles down a little. Nice lacing. Aroma is pine, orange, grapefruit, sweet malt. Flavor is much the same with a knock of cascade hops. Palate is medium, carbonation is medium, resinous, somewhat dry and bitter finish. Solid product, easy drinker.

Bottle: Copper colored pour with an off white head. Aroma, caramel and earthy hops, some citrus. Flavor, malty up front, a dry earthy bitterness, some grassy notes, and a hint of pine. Not bad.

Clear copper body, light beige head, adequate lacing. Aroma is grapefruit and orange with touches of sweet malts, caramel and pine. Flavor is more of the same, Cascade hops stealing the show. Resiny, sticky and moderately dry finish. Palate is medium to full. A decent, quaffable rendition.

Pours a light amber color with a fizzy, white head. Clear body with a mostly diminishing head with good lacing. Aroma is of tea and honey. Initial taste is moderately bitter, moving to a light bitter finish. Light on the palate, it has soft carbonation with an oily/creamy texture. Reviewed on December 18th, 2006.

Draft. A fairly sweet IPA, but done well so that the sweetness does not overpower the hops. Off-white head on top of a clear, copper-colored body. Grapefruit and orange nose with some notes of pine. Flavor is bitter with a solid malty backbone. Comfortable mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Nice balance. Easy drinking.

12 oz bottle. Deep rich copper colour with a thick creamy beige head. Aroma is quite fresh. Grapefruity cascades over a sweet caramel malt base. Fairly bready aroma as well. Flavour is similar. Not quite as punchy on the aroma as the tap version I had a few weeks ago, but it still has good balance. Sweet, slightly toasty/nutty malts and a great grapefruit/tropical hop flavour. Light resinousness. Warming brings a sweeter cookie dough character to the malts, accentuated by the low to moderate bitterness.

12 oz bottle from Beers of the World in Rochester, NY (October 2006) consumed from a Hair of the Dog glass at a bit above fridge temperature, late November. Very small creamy off-white head tops the clear amber-copper body, dies slowly and leaves a hint of lace....fragrant orange-grapefruit dominated nose as expected, quite fresh, with some nice hints of pine tar and apricots in syrupy giving it that extra point or so of interest, nothing extremely original but very well done....the body is much drier than the nose would expect, just enough sweetness to keep the finish from really being harsh, the end result is peppery, bitter and hop-dominated, and faint papery woody-caramel touches just barely helping to keep the strong, hard carbonation from damaging things too much. The finish really hurts this....as is a decent IPA that I could well imagine being much better on tap, with a creamier mouthfeel.
