| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 31, 2007 Bottle from Capone’s. Fans of the Good Doctor know that next to the Imperial styles, nut brown is one of my favorites, and it seems to be getting harder and harder to come by this style these days. This one pours burnt sienna with 1-finger off-white head. Aroma is caramel/scotchy malt, wheaties, brown sugar, figs, almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, and some rye/pumpernickel breads. The taste is very Wheaties-like, with brown sugar, fig, and the aforementioned nut trifecta, plus a dollop of maple syrup. This one tastes and smells a lot like Celebrator, but without quite as much palate heft and complexity. Ernest (4499), Boulder, Colorado, USA
| 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Feb 5, 2004 Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly
diminishing. Body is medium brown. Aroma is lightly malty (caramel,
toasted bread), lightly hoppy (herbs, flowers). Flavor is moderately
sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet,
moderately acidic, moderately bitter, slightly husky. Medium body,
watery texture, lively carbonation, metallic. Off-flavors come out of
the woodwork in the finish (sourness, metallic taint, grainy), and the
aroma is vague and uninteresting. Lackluster-to-poor brown ale. muzzlehatch (4427), Burlington, Vermont, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Oct 15, 2005 12 oz bottle from sampler 12-pack, sampled in a hotel room in Battle Creek, MI. Clear walnut-bronze with a touch of lasting head...herbal, lightly nutty-sweet nose, slightly flowery...bit too heavily carbonated and thinnish on the tongue, but pleasant light nutty-malty character, herbal undertones near the dry finish. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 24, 2008 Bottle from beerbill and served in my Newcastle no-nik pint glass: Caramel brown hue with a mostly lasting frothy head and okay lace. The aroma has notes of caramel, toffee, walnut, chocolate, aromatic and herbal hops (yep Fuggles), leather and pipe tobacco, and a hint of mineral. The nose is quite good for the genre.
The taste starts sugary and malty sweet with a chocolate covered cashew background. A hint of herbs and flowers upon the dry chalky finish. End with a quick dose of cold pressed coffee. The mouth feel is soft and approachable. All in all, this is better than average for the style, I think the added chocolate malts helps a lot. A nice rounded beer IMO.
