Very light on the aroma and in the flavor, which drops right off in the finish. A bit of chocolate and caramel, but ends up getting slightly muddled and watered down in the finish. kp (8399), Woodstock, Georgia, USA

Pours an extra dark brown, really this looks more like a porter with a neat, tan head. The nose is muted with some faint notes of mild chocolate, hickory, pumpernickel. It’s a rather tart brown ale, not hoppy, but tart in a way similar to wood or pumpernickel. There is no strong sweetness and the finish is slightly acrid. This is just okay. chronictonic (402), Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Jun 15, 2005 on tap at the green man - asheville nc - this review is for the cask version - see notes below for the regular tap version. coffee roasted aroma along with a medium to dark brown color. nice thick foamy head. served at a good temp for cask. great conditioning in the cask - mouthfeel was excellent. flavor was very good for a brown ale (where i expect bland). sweet malts with a bit of roasted coffe (a bit out of character and almost porter like). if this were an official beer cometition it would lose points probably for being out of style - but nevertheless, it was very drinkable and enjoyable. the regular tap version was way over carbonated and you could barely taste anything amidst all of the abrasiveness. my wife - who normally hates cask beer - much preferred teh cask version.
