Very disappointing. I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt here and assuming it’s a bad batch, but this was actually not very drinkable. There was a nice malty background, but something just wasn’t right in the finish.

Draught. Pours clear mahogany with a small, fizzy, white head, diminishing with spare lacing. Aroma is average malt (straw, bread, chocolate), average hop (grass), average yeast (dough) with notes of pear and apple. Medium bodied, slick texture, average carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, light sweetness, moderate acidity, and heavy bitterness. Light chocolate, caramel notes in the flavor.

Tap at the brewpub on 2/3/08: Transparent copper orange with a wispy-lacing white head. Aroma of sweet toasty caramel malty notes and some earthy piny English hops. Body starts with good fullness and sweet toasty caramel maltiness balanced with a resiny hop bitterness. Smooth, true to style and enjoyable, a good ESB.

On tap at Jack of the Wood. Mild toasty aroma with light hop character. Mild nose with a bit of acetaldehyde. Dark amber clear with thin head. Medium body with medium carbonation. Starts and stays sweet with roasted grain and biscuit. Clean taste with light bitter finish and nutty after, with a hint of chocolate.

On tap at the brewpub. Pour is a clear orangish amber color. Nutty almond aroma with a caramel tinge. Flavor is nutty at first but then there is a burst of red fruit and hop bitterness at the end. A hint of wood underlying all of it. Decent but not what I would expect from an esb in terms of fruit flavors.
