Draught in Laughing Seed, right next to Jack of the Wood. Short white lacing head, dark amber body. Potent aroma, fugglish hops balanced with toffee and light chocolate and caramel aroma. Great malt backbone, great ESB aroma. Lightly bitter, medium-full body is crisp and tingly with great character. Loaded with caramel and lesser notes of toffee. Funky English hops linger long in the aftertaste with toffee and caramel. Absolutely superb, robust and memorable yet easily quaffed on a daily basis. Tastes much better and fresher than the samples I had in Jack of the Wood.

Appearance: (It’s dark in the brewpub at night!) Clear, pretty, copper color. Nose: Not a whole lot in the aroma department. Subtle grains. Taste: Yummy and fun! This one had a "mystery burnt taste" that I spent the majority of the pint trying to pinpoint -- I settled on a not-unpleasant combination of grass, popcorn, ak-mak crackers, toffee, and peat, with a twist of nectarines and caramel. Very distinctive, judicious but mild hopping, nice. Palate: Smooth and easy. Overall: I got over the lack-of-nose thing pretty quickly. This one is distinctive -- it’s great. I also discovered that the hops are in the burp!

A bitter done right, but served way too cold. Let it warm up and you will be rewarded. Light hoppiness mixes with a mellow malting. Drink a few of these.

Very similar to their IPA with respect to appearance aroma and palate but the flavor is slightly more balanced than the IPA. Very earthy aroma and flavor. Good beer though. *** also had a cask-conditioned version of this brew which was fantastic! ***

Listed as being 5.5% at the time of this rating. Appearance: Pours a clear, dark copper body with a small, white head. Smell: Pale, bready malts with some slight sweetish toffee notes. Taste: Biscuity, pale maltiness with a bit of toffee-like sweetness. Earthy, medium hop bitterness. Lightly bitter finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: A decent ESB.

tap. Deep copper color, thin white head. Fruity, some light chocolate, nutty, toasted grains all in the nose. Rich and full flavored. Huge roasted flavor, roasted nuts, biscuits. Fruity esters in the finish. Linger bitterness keeps the pleasantness long lasting. Finishes dry. Yum.

Tap at the brewpub on 2/3/08: Transparent copper orange with a wispy-lacing white head. Aroma of sweet toasty caramel malty notes and some earthy piny English hops. Body starts with good fullness and sweet toasty caramel maltiness balanced with a resiny hop bitterness. Smooth, true to style and enjoyable, a good ESB.
