Had this on draft at the Jack of the Wood shortly after St. Patty’s Day. They were calling it their Irish Stout. I thought they had actually given me a guinness and claimed it for their own! Near black pour with ample creamy tan head. Aroma is light (probably due to the nitro) with subtle chocolate, roast, oats, and some dark berry hints in the flavor. Wonderfully creamy body. I could drink this all night long. One of the best beers I’ve ever had.

Draught at brew pub. Nice obvious nitro-stout appearance, dark with a tan head. The aroma is a bit restrained (in typical Jack of the Wood fashion) but smoky sweet coffee notes stand out. The flavor is an oat and sweet chocolate onslaught, with the creamy mouthfeel making it very rich and deep. The rich espresso finish rounds off this very nice brew.

This was a good beer. One of the smoothest beers I have ever had. Very smokey flavor, which I’m usually not partial too, but I would have again just to experience the smoothness and creaminess.

I thoujght this was an excellent oatmeal stout. rich toffee mocha aromas mixed with chocolates and malts. Huge espresso nose. Flavor matched the aroma - big espresso, roasted, chocolate flavors. Good mouthfeel - thankfully not overcarbonated like the brown ale. While not as good as farmer john’s oatmeal stout, this is a very good outmeal stout - certainly the best i’ve had south of the mason-dixon line!

Draught. This is a rich opaque black brew with a nitro cascade that leaves a dense, even tan head. This has strong toasted grains in the nose with some fine pipe smoke. This is one of the oattiest stouts I’ve ever had. It’s like chocolate oatmeal. This is a deep creamy beer with a very silky palate and some creamy sweetness in the finish. Oh yeah, huge oats. [sampled most recently on 3-14-07] These days this stout is a notch less oaty, but still quite silky and delicious. Great balance of syrupy chocolate, coffee, and oatmeal.

on draught- My first trip to Jack of the Wood was not enjoyable, so I was surprised this time to find a rich opaque black brew cascading slowly in my glass after ordering. A dense, even tan head remained.

Black. Good head leaving lots of lace, sweet roasted aroma, rich creamy body with a good dose of chocolate, touch of oatmeal oilyness, slight lingering bitter finish that almost disappears when it warms

Darught at the brewpub. Opaque black with brown head. Aroma and flavor are similar with milk chocolate, toffee and buttery caramel. Slightly sweet. Very good sweet stout.

Draught. Pours black with ruby edges and a creamy tan head. It has a roasty aroma with hints of caramel and chocolate and maybe some nuts. The flavor is smooth and roasty, with a good dose of sweet chocolate and a hint of toast from time to time. An assertive oatmeal character really helps bring it together, too. The finish is slightly bitter, and the aftertaste is ashy and a bit roasty. I’m impressed.
