A bit thin in body, with moderate carbonation. Flavor is roasted malt, but kind of musty. Tends to overpower the bitter. Finishes rather dry. Almost a touch of chocolate at the finish. Seems a bit crude, but it’s different and tasty. At least this batch is. Reviewing earlier ratings, I suspect there may be some batch variations. DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 24, 2007 Bottle from Capone’s. Pours hazy ruby with a 3-finger khaki head. I loved the look of this one. Aroma is roasty caramel malt, brown sugar, cabernet, and some rauchy hints. Tastes caramel malty, with cabernet, brown sugar, some nuts, and a twinge of rauchy roastiness as it warms. This one was well balanced, complex, and a very nice surprise. | 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Jun 12, 2006 Pours a cloudy gold from the bottle. Looks a lot like a pale ale, but that is where the similarity ends. Has a great deal of aromatic and flavoring hops. Is bitter, but this is somewhat pleasant. Tastes a bit watery; lacking in body. No maltiness, rather only hops in the flavor. harlequinn (2745), Tacoma, Washington, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | May 30, 2006 An interesting amberish ale. Definitely english in style, dry red and pale maltiness, with some bittering dry hoppiness in the end. Easy to drink and well balanced. Lubiere (4549), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Strong diacetyl, butter and bunred caramel in mouth. Medium bodied, and cloying. On tap at brewery, August 2005. DavidP (1743), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 13, 2005 Clear brown body, not much head. Bready, dark caramel malt aroma with a hint of musty green hops. A darker variety of malt in the flavor, now trending towards chocolate. Tangy orangey hops. Nicely substantial mouthfeel. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 13, 2005 Caramel brown in color with little bubbly lines for a head. Aroma is caramel and roasted malts, starch and paprika. Flavor is nutty and sweet, with a small slab of margarine. Just kind of sits on the tongue. Caramel chocolate rolls out and reminds me of a Rolo. Lingering scratchiness at the back of throat, almost with a peppered maple finish. MIBRomeo (1965), Wisconsin, USA
