Commercial Description:
This unique beer is a plum infused Wee Heavy that experienced a secondary fermentation from native Athens’ micoflora off of the skins of the local plums. This all happened with in an American Oak barrel over the course of three months. A 10.5% one of a kind brew that embodies tart/sweet plumbs, peat-smoked Scottish ale, and second-generation bourbon barrel flavors (soft bourbon notes and some very refined oak character). It was exciting to see this beer actually make it on tap. I thought it was a crazy idea. Once that barrel was opened up, a delightful surprise sprang forth.

58 hr old growler rating: Same as follows. Pretty sweet, but not fatiguingly so. The plumminess still waits till very warm to come out. My friends thought it was highly bourbony but I still think it’s not overwhelming. This is a strong beer! Draft rating: Surprisingly mature beer, but I had no expectations and this is my first and only Jackie-Os beer. Nice draft pour in a medium-sized snifter, well-conditioned with fine bubbles continuing to rise throughout the drink. Aroma and flavor while cold are quite subdued and the beer is subsequently dangerously drinkable. A good bit of woodiness and a little bit of booze are apparent in the aroma, with vanilla hints as pantanap says. Fruity at first, but vague, could be cherry or even grape. As this warms though there is expansion of leather notes, tannins, molasses and iron, and not a whole lot of bourbon, which to me was a welcome relief. At the end of the glass the mature, deep plumminess is completely evident and I was taking it very slow, savoring every drop, mixing sweetness with a tangy finish of plum, bourbon, oak, peat, and, again, molasses and iron. Delicious. (It occurs to me that the description says second-generation barrel - so 2nd usage? No wonder this is allowing the fruit to come through so well).

Had on tap during Jackie O’s 4th Anniversary Extravaganza. I enjoyed this one a lot! Some campfire on the nose. Lots of plums. Vanilla. Woody and boozy. Slight souring on the end. Tried the 08 and 09 versions. Preferred the 08!

Sample during Jackie O’s 4th Anniversary Extravaganza. Hazy brown pour with a medium tan head. Nose of woody bourbon and tart fruit. Sour fruit and sweet malt flavor up front with a bitter and slightly boozy finish. Nice complexity to this brew and balanced very well.

Clear brown color, no head. Big bourbon aroma with tart fruit. Nearly still mouthfeel with tart berry fruit skin, big boozy vanilla whiskey, mild brown malt flavors. Too much bourbon here imho.

Thanks goryshkewych for the trade. Pours deep, dark red-brown with an off-white head. Nose is sweet malt, vanilla, maple, dark fruit, sweet, boozy bourbon, and some dark fruitiness. Flavor is similar with lots of sweet, seductive bourbon, vanilla, malt, and fruit. Another excellent beer from Jackie O’s.

Growler pour courtesy of markwise, thanks again Mark. Pours strikingly clear amber with copper edges and thin nearly white head. The aroma has lots of sweet bourbon and dry oak along with hints of plum fruit meat. The taste is smooth and dry with boozy bourbon, vanilla, oak and some malts. It seems to end with a mild level of vanilla, booze, dryness, oak and more dryness.

Swingtop hand bottle. Initially, there are some light acetic aromas to the beer. That fades and then the plum characteristics come out. A little bit of wood. Some vanilla. Lighter roasty malt notes. A some light cheesy funk as the beer nears room temperature. Pours a dark, muddy brown with some glints of ruby when held up to the light. Flavor is interesting, but kind of all over the place. First off there’s the base beer... a little bit of smoke, peat and toasty dark malt. Then there is the slight tart, frutiness of the plums and finally some vanilla and tannic dryness from the barrels. The wood presence increases as the beer warms. Very drying on the back and sides of the tongue. Interesting, but not integrated all that well. Medium bodied and slightly greasy. Average carbonation leading to a drying and slightly watery finish. Thanks Jonathan!
