Pours more ruby than brown with a fading frothy head and surprisingly good lacing. The aroma has the standards brown ale characteristics of walnut, carmel and toasted malting, grassy hops. This one also has some pear, cherry, and dusty yeast esters. The taste leaves something to be desired with a strange mix of sweet malt and finish of lactic sourness and acidic fruits. The off flavors seem to mask any nutty or caramel goodness that could have been underneath. The palate is watery and harsh, yeasty dry. I will take a pass if offered this brew again. ratman197 (3270), Arvada, Colorado, USA

Aromas of toffee, nuts, and strong carmel. Palate was medium bodied ,but a little light for the style. Flavors of carmel, toffee, nuts, abnd a touch of cocoa with a slightly dry, lightly bitter finish. swebri (16), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA

Amber ales never have enough malt character for me. The Burly Brown left me flat and wanting more. CharlesDarwin (1867), Point Judith, Rhode Island, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Aug 22, 2005 Slightly hazed, ruddy brown. Topped with a nice soapy off-white head. Light aroma of strong caramel, toffee, dusted with a hint of dry cocoa powder and raspberry seeds. Bittered nutty finish, backed with watery diacetlys and buttescotch. A hint of roasted coffee and chocolate. Finish is a little rough and unsettling, with an overwhelming presence of sugary hop resions that bite. A tinge of fruit. Dryish. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 31, 2005 Deep Brown Color. Sweet Roasted Caramel flavor. Slightly over carbonated. Not bad flavor. Would be a very solid brew if the flavor were a little stronger or the carbonation was a little lighter. MilkmanDan (1940), Eagan, Minnesota, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 21, 2005 Reddish-brown. Nose malty, somewhat sweet, caramel and a bit of peat. Flavor again malty and sweet caramel, bit biscuity and bready. Not offensive, but tastes like an amber-aled version of a brown, where it was sweetened up a bit in order to try to appeal to more people.
