Sweet citrus aroma with some piney hops. Soft citrus taste with a hoppy bitter finish. Dry texture with average carbonation. Needs more flavor to stand out from the pack. Pours a clear golden amber colored brew with a thin off-white head that slowly dissipates and leaves behind some excellent lacing. Aroma is fruity, some caramel malt, flowery hops and some earthy herbs. Taste is medium bodied with flavors of caramel malt, a touch of apple skin, grassy and floral hops and a touch of spice. Finish is mildly bitter with some grapefruit zest and grassy hop aftertaste. CharlesDarwin (1845), Point Judith, Rhode Island, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | May 28, 2008 On tap at the brewpub. Faint hop aroma. I can tell there’s something there, but it doesn’t really show. Pours a
clearish amber-gold, with an off-white head above. Flavor is dirty and bitter. Ugh. What’s
in here? Pennies, socks and iron ore? Messy, this is all over the road. A typical, darker
pale ale base is here, but it’s tainted with some off-earth character and a bad, bad
bitterness. This is the kind of hoppy beer that turns people off of good beer. For that, I
loathe this example. Learn how to get some flavor out of hops and don’t just make something
bitter. Silphium (2137), Haslett, Michigan, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Aug 11, 2007 On tap at the restaurant/brewpub. Translucent orange-brown body, medium buff head. Medicinal hops aroma, herbal, perfumey, and earthy. Malts are dry. Body is also dominated by perfumey, medicinal hops (I can’t think of the hops variety, but it’s a distinctive one). Toasty, slightly caramely malt backs the hops profile. Strays from the typical pine and grapefruit pale ale hops theme. OK. chriso (4796), London, Greater London, England

This and the stout were the pick of the beers here for me. Attractive bright ginger colour with a lasting white head. Nice condition - lively without being too fizzy. Plenty of grapefruit hop character in the aroma and flavour. Dry, bitter mouthfeel. Very refreshing. Nothing particularly out of the ordinary, and maybe a little one-dimensional, but a very good example of the style. His was the beer I returned to for a pint after finishing the sampler.

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 15, 2007 Pours a lightly hazed deep gold. It has a thin cap of white foam and decent lacing. Mildly hoppy aroma.
Hoppy and bitter, but not much other character. Pine hops. Light body. Good carbonation. Lingering pine hop aftertaste. Worth trying for sure, but not exceptional.
