| 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 1/5 | 8/20 | Dec 1, 2009 It definately smells, but not good. There is a malt aroma with ... not quite the olive smell but somehow salty, maybe a bit of soy sauce. Very dark, keeps lacing nicely after the head dies down. Good beginning taste, but over the taste you get a bit of topsoil and and sourness, not exactly what I want from my stout. Aftertaste is sometimes ok, but sometimes has a metallic twinge to it, I usually avoid things tasting of metal. This is just OK at best, but at the cost and the quality I will avoid it in the future. | 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Dec 1, 2009 Pours black with a thin brown head no retention. Dull roasted malt aroma. Flavour is bold, maLTY, smooth, and hoppy in the finish. very earthy for a stout. Not bad. DuffMan (2756), the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, Canada
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 1, 2009 Bottle, shared with Parksy. Near black, amber highlights, thick mocha head that leaves nice lace. Aroma of raisins, bitter chocolate, molasses, and char. Sweet full-bodied palate, with roasty burnt toffee, chocolate, char, and stewed fruits. Moderately bitter finish. A pleasant surprise! Vertical Bacon Strips (891), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 25, 2009 Poured out a black brew with a decent sized dark chocolate mild brown cap that is a bit fizzy but it stays as more than a skim.. barely. Very good sticky lacing. Coffee wafts through my nose, heavily roasted, ashes are prominent, foot, some citrus and candy. Massive roast taste. Instant alcohol and more ashes, chocolate, odd spice that is like a cinnamon / licorice hybrid, some coffee. Too ashy and too much alcohol but it’s a really good beer. Dark fruit. Thick mouth feel, burnt log residue cannot be shaken, heavy after taste that fades to just burnt logs. Logs. Macadem (101), Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Oct 25, 2009 Give this beer a couple minutes to open up. It will have a nice aroma of charcoal, ash, cigar smoke, caramel and molasses. Tastes is more of the same with less caramel, but more molasses and fruit notes. The mouthfeel is watery, but sticks to your mouth. Not bad. Cirrhosis (619), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 6, 2009 Dark, dark, dark, dark, thick looking brown fluid resting quietly in this unassuming glass, webs of bubbles are strung across the surface as if waiting to ensnarl an unsuspecting passerby in its net of mystery. Heavy better coffee rises from the surface of the black fluid filling the nose with memories of first dates and early morning jogs that help awaken your senses for the experience to soon come, notable alcohol is also there to greet you but it has nothing to say except I am your friend enjoy my company. When the fluid blankets your tongue for the time you want to say thank you sir for dumping you ash tray into my coffee. The brew is bitter, more bitter as the coldest winter night but somehow a lonely sweet fruit can extend its hand towards you to be touch and enjoyed. The intensity of this black poem rivals that of any great passionate love story too big to handle, to fantastic to turn away. Ughsmash (4027), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA
| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Oct 2, 2009 660mL bottle. Poured medium-deep brown with a short-ish cap of tan head.. settled quickly and left a dusting. The aroma picked up sweeter caramel, honey, and molasses notes backed by raisins, cocoa, and a pinch of dark fruit.. middle of the road stout-wise. The flavor wasn’t so good.. it opened with an odd oaky/vinegary tartness with tacky, pervasive oxidation and cardboard spewing onto the middle.. molasses and tar formed a bit of a base.. bitterness was light and coffee-inspired.. the nasty components stuck on the finish for far too long. Medium-bodied and slick at times on the palate.. odd, misplaced tartness in places.. not a good feel at all.
