Commercial Description:
John Labatt Classic was introduced in 1983 as Canada’s only national domestic “premium beer”. It is Krausen-brewed (slow, low temperature with a secondary fermentation process) and has a longer cold-aging process. Classic uses all-malt and a unique blend of western-grown North American hops, providing a smooth, full flavour product with a true malt taste that is slightly sweet. Editor's Note: Is this only available in the US?

Bottle - from sampler pack. Light gold, clear. Decent beer. Some hoppiness, definite adjuncts.

Easy to drink, not bad for a large brewer. Actually has a minor flavor profile, so something good (in a small amount) was put into this beer.

Pours a golden color, and hardly deserves the "premium" given in the Commercial description. Fairly watery with about as much character as a fence post.

Light straw color with an off-white bubbly head. Aroma has hints of caramel and light floral citric hops. Really working hard to come up with more in the aroma, but not getting any. LIght toasted malt start. Which is quickly washed away by the bitterness. Quite crisp and dry in the finish. This seems like a good brew for working outside in the fall. A little malt, a little bite, a bit quenching.

Rated while drinking: Got this in a variety pack at Wegmans, so if it’s retired, this bottle must be old. But I tried one the other day and it tasted fine, so I’m not sure if this is officially retired (even though it’s hard to find on the Labatt site). Anyways, this beer pours a color I’m used to seeing: A light golden blonde, but this one boasts a big white head on top. Faint dry malt and cereal smell, but has faint whips of metal in there. Not too appealing. Flavor is better than the aroma. Nice malt backbone, with other grain tastes at the end. Aftertaste is probably the best part; can actually taste hops in there. As familiar with other macro brews, this is watery and almost too drinkable. It doesn’t taste retired to me, but it was OK.

This is an average beer, certainly not a classic. No longer as heavily marketed as it was in the early 90s, but then again, in Canada, it seems only Molson Canadian is marketed to any real extent any more....no more ’Me and the Boys and our 50, me and the boys and our beer’. Anyway, I had this beer in a near frozen state. The beer is a translucent pale gold colour which looks great in a glass. There was very little aroma, but what aroma there was was slightly malty and pleasant. The mouthfeel was crisp with mild carbonation and the taste was mellow, but not watery in the least. Never really figured out why it was called ’classic’ - but it certainly isn’t as bad as Blue.

Hooked one from a friend’s case at Xmas just got round to reviewing it. This shows as a golden lager with a 2 finger rocky cap. We have a labat beer that actually laces the glass!! Really all malt beer ! Aroma is mainline: grainy, some caramel some light willamette hops. Meduim bodied, smooth mouth feel. Fair malt spine. Flavor is malty with light balance from the hops some unripened fruit tomes ( apple/pear) clean wet finish with a bready aftertaste.....right down the middle an inoffensive medium bodied all malt golden lager...see Labatt we knew you could do it!

A pale yellow lager that was surprisingly good for a big brewery beer. A subtle fruit/hop mixture was quite pleasent to taste and smell. It’s too bad Labatt din’t try to push this beer to masses a bit more.
