Aroma has some malt, roasty coffee and noble hops, but, because the boneheads use clear bottles, there some definite skunk in there too. Fortunately, the skunk doesn’t carry over into the flavour which is not that bad, a nice blend of chocolate malt, sweetness, and hops bitterness, complimented by the bitterness of the dark malts. Medium to full body with low to moderate carbonation. This could be really good on tap. 11026 (1772), Alabama, USA

Off-white head is long lived, good lacing. A little thin in body. Bitter to the point of near harshness. Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA

Dark orangish-borwn that’s almost transparent when held to the light. Nice tan head with fair retention. Real nice lacing. Malty up front with a sweet coffee and chocolate finish. More coffee than chocolate in the finish. A little thin. qdog (201), Cleveland, Mississippi, USA

| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Jan 1, 2005 The Lure: Dry roasty malts conversing quietly with some oatmeal. Big bubbles sometimes hang on the glass.
The Festivities: Herbal hops mix with the dry roastiness and a faint sweetness attempts to marry them.
Transcendence: My uncle was proud of this one. shintriad (698), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 30, 2004 Dark opaque brown. Pepsi-like appearance in glass, if properly poured gives good head, some bubbles, a hint of lace. Toasty, somewhat hoppy finish as it warms, meek caramel and anise notes come through the nose. Mild chocolate emerges later, attached to a hint of sourness. I prefer a chewier, thicker porter with more substance. Crimes against humanity: clear bottle, availability restricted to six-pack. Good effort for Sleeman, though. Eructoblaster (1510), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 26, 2004 Dark brown body with reddish glints and a good but diminishing off-white foamy head. Fair malty aroma with strong notes of brown sugar and some others of roasted coffee. Taste is quite robust, with roasty and hoppy flavors. It ends with a good bitter finish. Although this is not a great porter, this is nonetheless the very best beer from Sleeman.
